Any recommendations would be great Hi dvestate, You'll find that despite the hysteria surrounding carpet and asthma, it generally will prove to be a superior choice over other floor types because it traps dust and dirt and allows it to be removed, whilst other floor types allow it to circulate in the room and be breathed in. You may wish to investigate products that have less chemicals in them to assist your families health though. You could look at a good quality wool carpet. The Australian Asthma Foundation has wool carpet in their head office ! Wool carpets are naturally good for cleaning and regarded as outstanding for bouncing back after furniture has been sitting on them. If your interested in stain protection as the key factor, then Smartstand is also a good choice as it not only out performs all other man made fibres in terms of staining, it also has no added chemicals applied onto it after its made. All other man made carpets have a fluro carbon added to the outside of the carpet fibre to assist in blocking stains penetrating the fibres. Smartstand doesn't need it so it's just one less chemical that you have to worry about. Smartstand will recover from indentations too, it's just that it will take a little more effort than a wool. At its molecular level, Smartstrand is superior to other man made fibres in that it is naturally bent, not straight up and down, so just like a coil, it springs back into shape better than if it were not engineered that way. All the best for your flooring project. They're easy to run over with a damp mop to keep dust under control. You have to damp-dust furniture and shelves anyway - dust doesn't care what height the surface is; it'll settle anywhere. I prefer carpet underfoot in bedrooms though, and I'd recommend wool carpets as well - regular vacuuming is usually enough to keep things under control. Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 4Mar 04, 2012 7:50 pm In our last house we had both wooden floorboards and a few rugs and were very happy. The rugs were taken outside and beaten by healthy hubbie once a month (it was disgusting what still came out of them, despite regular vaccuming!) and the floorboards were so easy care; you can go over them every day with a static dustmop if you want to, takes hardly any time or effort, no damping needed. As well, using both floorboards and rugs you can make cozy zones with furniture groups. No cold tootsies in winter where you spend most of your time (ie in front of TV, computer etc). As for chair marks etc, just rotate the rug and eh voila! the wear will be even and the marks will disappear if you have purchased a good quality rug (and wool springs back the best). Strangely although I am allergic to wool, I bought a wool/silk blend rug and had no problems with it. . . Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 5Mar 04, 2012 10:47 pm Im an asthma suffer too and I agree with Kek I like carpet in the bedrooms. I have always had wool carpets and never noticed my asthma to be worse or better with carpet that any other floor covering, its mostly about keeping them clean and the dust to a minimum. I vacuum everyday. I also choose a low loop pile carpet as i just find they wear better in traffic areas that cut/plush pile and and tend to be better at the furniture indents. HN has a good point about picking a carpet that has less chemicals. Wool is a natural product another reason why I like it. Goodluck Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 6Mar 21, 2012 1:03 pm Wool carpets is the way to go in the bedrooms if you do not like wood finish. As everyone says regular vacuum cleaning would get rid of most of the dust that settles in the carpet fibers... Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 7Mar 21, 2012 1:13 pm Thanks for the replies everyone, great information in every post Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 8Mar 21, 2012 5:29 pm If you think any sort of carpet is clean, then come and work for me. Ill pay you $25 per hour to remove the carpet and underlay from houses where Im contracted to sand the floor. Doesn't matter how fastidious the owner is, there is always an amazing amount of detritus under the floor coverings. Timber floor every time. I do acknowledge that I'm not particularly objective Re: Choosing Carpet for an Asthma sufferer 9Mar 21, 2012 5:50 pm namtrak, would that not be the same as dust that settles on the fridge or shelves? as long as the dust is not disturbed it would stay under the carpet unlike on the wooden floor... please... do correct me if I am wrong... Thanks for the reply. Had a look at the suggested lot and found other problem on easement, which i will asked in separate thread. 2 16623 1 10973 1 15703 |
