Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Feb 01, 2012 1:05 am Hi everyone, I wanted to remove the ugly cork tiles in my dining room\kitchen and either sand it back down to the orginal wooden floorboards or replace with new porcelan tiles. Now im in a dilemna where I need to decide on my next cause of action. I am in the situation where I have stripped my cork floor tiles (including the wooden underlay the cork tiles were on). All the ryvets\nails holding the wooden underlay have also been removed. Now I am basically down to the original old vynyl tiles which have been stuck directly on the wooden floorboards with black cutback adhesive. There are sections of the old vynil tiles flooring that are cracked and raised from having to remove the nails from the wooden underlay. I have sent off a sample of the vynil tiles\cutback and am awaiting the results of whether it proves positive for ACM (asbestos containng material). After researching am I right in saying that here are my options below: ACM POSITIVE RESULT OPTIONS 1) The vynil tiles can be removed following the asbestos safety measures as per RFCi (Resilient Floor Covering Institute). However then I must still pay lots of $$$ for the cutback adhesive residue to be removed mechanically by professionals (especially if I want to go back to finshed up original floorboards). The question is, if the black cut residue is still left behind is there any adhesive used with porcelan tiles that will still work ok ? I doubt it. 2) Easy approach option is to just over ply the existing tiles with WBP plywood and tile over plywood. However I must take into account the additional height of orginal vynil tile, plywood and porcelan tile. ACM NEGATIVE RESULT OPTIONS 1) The vynil tiles can be removed and the black cutback scraped and the orginal floorboards sanded back for finish and laniate or over ply the floorboards WBP plywood and tile over plywood. 2) Easy approach option is to just over ply the existing tiles WBP plywood and tile over plywood. However I must take into account the additional height of orginal vynil tile, plywood and porcelan tile. If anyone has any advice or other options they can suggest that would be great. cheers Paul Re: Tiling over vs removal of old vynil tiles and black cutb 3Feb 07, 2012 6:45 pm Like Paul Mac has stated, You could glue, nail & screw the Ceramic tile u'lay over the existing if well stuck, level etc. I would personally remove the lot & start from scratch as I hate finding nasty things that other people have hidden over the years. Its your house & budget, either option will work, take the option you can live happily ever after with. Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones. Bugger of a job getting the old… 0 8088 just pull up the slate. If you go over the top, your tiles would not have an even surface to be glued to. Im no tiler, but i can imagine a couple of things being an issue… 1 319 Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom. I want to remove stains and gloss seal.
