Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Disadvantage of installing timber floor in the kitchen? 2Nov 29, 2011 4:51 am A timber floor can give you years of enjoyment. Answering your second question first, yes you can use a wet mop on wood floors. For big messes use a mild soap as this will not hurt the floor. However, if you flood the floor and let water soak in to the floor you will have swelling. This will most likely require a total replacement of the floor. In most cases timber floors can’t be repaired. Personally I love timber floors in a home. I think it makes a home feel cozy and warm. I hope this helps, HouseFenster Re: Disadvantage of installing timber floor in the kitchen? 3Nov 29, 2011 5:20 pm You shouldn't "wet mop" as such, but you can use water and a mop that is well wrung out. It basically should dry almost immediately when you run the mop over it. It is still timber, and although it is sealed there is still the possibility of the sealer not covering all areas which would make the timber swell. If you are going for timber laminate floors instead of solid timber floors, be even more careful of mopping - as with any laminate, moisture is one of its worst enemies! If a bit of moisture gets into the laminate it will bow and peel... unfortunately I speak from experience, even though I used almost no water when mopping it only took a few years for the edges to start peeling up Re: Disadvantage of installing timber floor in the kitchen? 4Nov 29, 2011 8:20 pm Yes, moisture is the enemy. I use a microfibre mob on my timber kitchen floor just sprayed with a little PH balanced floor cleaner. No problems yet, over a year onwards. The only other disadvantage I can think of, is that the timber can dent. We have a couple of dents from when the dishes were overstacked in the drainer and saucepans toppled . Having said that, I still love the look of timber. Go for it! Re: Disadvantage of installing timber floor in the kitchen? 5Nov 29, 2011 8:49 pm Timber floors can look really stunning. I use a similar cleaning method to Trinity and use a microfibre mop and once in a while will use a wrung out floor mop mitt to clean.
