Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 21, 2011 12:52 pm We are planning to install a bamboo floor (strand-woven, tongue-groove) over our existing cypress wooden floor. Before we do, we will install a new kitchen and here is my question: a) would you install the kitchen on top of the existing timber floor (then add ~15 mm in height to compensate for the bamboo flooring installed later) b) would you install bamboo (or some other) flooring prior to installing the kitchen? I am NOT concerned about which option is cheaper or easier to do, I am interested in a professional quality job. Thanks in advance Chris Re: Install bamboo floor before or after? 2Nov 23, 2011 6:07 pm You can do it either way….some do it before and others after to save on the cost of the flooring. Since you’re not likely to be installing another kitchen for quite some time, after might be a better option. BUT, if you install before your kitchen you wont need the bamboo scochia around the kicks and front, so a neater look. If you want something that looks professional, then installing your bamboo flooring first then your kitchen will give a really quality appearance and look to your kitchen that can't be achieved if the flooring was installed after the kitchen. Also, another benefit of this if that in the future if your cabinets or whatnot need adjusting or fixing or alterations, it is more possible to do as there won't be missing areas that don't have the bamboo flooring. The only downside to this is that if something were to happen to your floors, it won't be possible to fix without affecting your kitchen as well. My suggestion is that if you are going for appearance, then I would go with second option of installing the flooring prior to the kitchen. Best of luck! Thanks in advance Chris Hello Chris The kitchen should be installed before the bamboo floor is installed. Main reason is that you don`t want the kitchen people to damage your new bamboo floor. Also if you don`t want beading around the kitchen the kick boards can be installed after the bamboo floor as been installed. Kitchen first, floor last. Leave the kick boards off and have them retro fitted by the cabinet maker to then not require beading. You can't tell the difference and it means if you have a flood or something terrible with your floor then you will not have to remove your entire kitchen to access your floor.
