Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 29, 2011 10:30 pm Gday all, I'm about to have a crack at extending out existing laminate flooring from the main living area up a couple a passage ways and into my study. My main concern is one hall way is littered with doors all of which have steel door frames. Cutting around them in my opinion is going to end up with poor results. Has anyone taken out small sections of steel frames for the wood to go under? How hard it it, did you just use a small grinder and was there a massive issue with stuffing up the frames integrity? In the end it will be just enough for the cut in the floor to be hidden, I wont be taking the entire base of the door out. Any hints and tips hugely appreciated. Re: Laminate flooring + steel door frames? 2Oct 30, 2011 11:22 pm Hi craig. Cutting the bottom of the frames is a common thing to do. You end up with a much cleaner job when it's done that way. The frames are screwed to the studs so it doesn't matter iff you needed to cut the entire bottom off the frame. Use a 5" grinder and the thin 1mm cut off discs. Just make sure you leave enough space for the flooring and underlay plus a little wiggle room. There is nothing worse than cutting the frames just a little to tight. Thanks for the info chippy, just quickly though, my house is entirely brick, so i'm not sure if they are fixed to the bricks at all? Will cutting the base stuff up the integrity of the frame? I will only need to entirely cut beneath one frame, the rest will be half wood and half carpetted. Re: Laminate flooring + steel door frames? 4Nov 01, 2011 9:40 am Hi Craig. All door frames are held in place. With brick walls there are clips put into the back of the frames that are then laid into mortar joints and the frame bricked in. Most brickies also fill the frames with mortar as they go. The frames will never move. You could cut as much as you want away and the rest will stay in place and be just as strong. Ok thanks mate, now you've confirmed for me that I will be cutting my door frames, wanna come and do it for me lol Need to find somewhere to hire an undercut saw from now. That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17875 Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14442 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8306 |
