Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 29, 2011 10:29 pm Hi We are deciding on the flooring of our bedrooms and my wife is dead certain she wants the whole house polished porcelin. Im not sure this is ideal for bedrooms as carpet is the usual choice for bedrooms. Has anyone heard of or seen houses that have tiles in the bedrooms? I keep telling her that it will get cold in the winter months so she says we can just put rugs down. She is against carpet as she hates any trace of dirt etc which are hidden in carpets. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 2Sep 29, 2011 10:39 pm If your wife hates dirt hidden in carpet, what about timber flooring. A bit more bedroom friendly. I would (and did) go for carpet in the bedrooms. But if using timber or tile, then a rug would make it nicer. but then wouldn't the rug hide dirt! Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: No carpet in bedrooms 3Sep 30, 2011 7:59 am Your choice, but an unwise one IMO Cold and hard under foot. You will need a mat for your feet before getting into bed to remove the dust from the floor. Tiled rooms ECHO...ECHO...ECHO..ECHO...ECHO... No carpet in bedrooms 4Sep 30, 2011 8:05 am Tiles are freezing in winter, I have them everywhere but the bedrooms. Rugs only cover so much and isn't she worried about the dirt hiding in the rugs? Dirt and fluff shows up on tiles and they will need vacuuming so why not vac carpet and stay warm. I do know someone who did timber in the beds and swore she would have carpet next time. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 5Sep 30, 2011 8:25 am I feel cold just thinking about tiles in the bedroom!!! I would avoid doing tiles in bedrooms. I understand her point about dirt in carpet but buy a really good quality vacuum cleaner!! I have friends with kids with terrible allergies so they put floorboards in their kids bedrooms to help. Floorboards are a much better option if your wife is really against carpet. I have seen tiles done in bedrooms on some of the home buying/renovating foxtel shows from overseas. It is only ever in the really hot countries!! Good luck. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 6Sep 30, 2011 8:32 am We did a major remodel many years ago. I went with tile throughout including the bedrooms because I collect antique rugs and just wanted them. I have the same view about carpet as your wife does. Ugh. Coldness wasn't a problem because we had underfloor radiant heating (another reason not to have carpet). The echo was ghastly at first until I had to cover almost every inch of bedroom floor with rugs with more on the walls. So just be aware that the tile floor probably will need to be covered but with far more rug than she is probably imagining right now. Otherwise it's like living in a bathroom and there is no privacy from sound carrying around the house. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 7Sep 30, 2011 8:57 am I am not a fan of carpet either, but I do have it in the bedrooms. I have tiles in every other room and they are really cold to walk on and noisy. I have quite a few rugs scattered around as well and they need vacuuming same as carpet. I do have a very good vacuum cleaner. I have seen tiles throughout a house but that was in Europe, and I was visiting in the warmer months, so not sure how it goes in their cold winters. Maybe have a bit more of a think about it before committing and ask a few other people who have tiles in most rooms. In the end though its your house and you may find that it isn't an issue for you. Good luck with everything. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 8Sep 30, 2011 9:05 am Have seen quite a few new and old houses around here with hard floors like floorboards or lino in bedrooms/ lounge rooms. Usually with rugs. Not as warm as carpet and not as sound containing but a workable option, especially given we are not in a cold part of Australia. But I wouldnt do tiles in a bedroom - having said that it is not uncommon in very hot areas such as FNQ. I get Armadio's reasoning - as in displaying antique rugs - but, OP, if your wife covers all the tiles with rugs, what is the advantage over doing carpet in the first place - you wont see the lovely tiles anyway and the rugs will hold as much dirt as the carpets Re: No carpet in bedrooms 9Sep 30, 2011 10:31 am We did have floor boards throughout in one house and they were noisy and cold, but looked nice. Pulled up carpet in one house years ago and had lino tiles in a wood look. They looked good and were not cold, easy to clean as well. Re: No carpet in bedrooms 10Sep 30, 2011 11:11 am i am going for tiles throughout including bedrooms. easy to clean. On carpets, i normally take my slippers off but with tiles i don't need to worry taking them off and on evertime i enter the bedroom.

Re: No carpet in bedrooms 12Oct 01, 2011 1:21 pm Personally I prefer timber floors/timber vinyl over carpets everytime but I live in North Queensland where the cold isn't such an issue. I have to admit that saying that I still prefer the look of carpet over tiles in a bedroom. I would definately suggest that timber would be less cold underfoot, and also tends not to echo quite so much. One advantage of using rugs over carpet is that if you do get stains or dirt in them, it is easier (although not necessarily cheaper) to replace a rug than to re-carpet, so that's one advantage I guess? We put vinyl planks throughout our house and for us it is PERFECT! The vinyl planks are warm underfoot so it is probably a little different to having TILES everywhere. (Although I'd still support your wife with tiles throughout) All floors inevitably get dirty! I'm a bit fussy about cleaning and I am astounded by how much I sweep and vacuum off our floors and I know that if we had carpet a lot of that would be trapped in the carpet. Yes I know you can buy a decent vacuum cleaner and have the carpets professionally cleaned but day-to-day I know I can keep my vinyl flooring cleaner than I could ever keep carpet! We have a small issue with mild echoing in the house but it isn't enough of a deterrent. No carpet all the way for me! Re: No carpet in bedrooms 14Nov 10, 2011 7:49 pm We are going timber in the bedrooms tile in the bathrooms and polished concrete in the living dining kitchen and laundry/powder. Yep having a bet each ways lol. As for the cold we have installed slab heating, the bedrooms have panels, so bring on next winter lol. Our current rental has quite thick plush carpet, and to be honest it is very comfy, but i shudder to think how dirty it really is. I am a little worried about how noisy the hallway will be but i guess we can install a hall runner if needed. As for the bedrooms we will get some nice big rugs.... maybe burnt orange shag pile Re: No carpet in bedrooms 15Nov 15, 2011 4:47 pm we have timber floors in the bedroom, it is noisy without lots of rugs, and the dark colour shows every speck of dust, but it is not too cold. I like it for the non-carpet germ factor You toss out a rug... but not carpet so easily Addicted to home design and new colour trends. So many good options- but so few rooms!
