Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 12, 2011 9:33 pm Any advice greatly appreciated as I'm pretty much a novice here. Almost finished building a new home and need to finalise flooring. My option allows me to get one of the following:- 1. brush box standard grade 130mm solid hard wood, to be polished once installed at approx $145 p/m installed. or 2. sydney bluegum prefinished 130mm select grade at approx $130 p/m installed. I think I prefer the grey/pink tones of the brush box as opposed to the redness of the bluegum. Do you think these are good prices? What would you do, and why. Thank you in advance for your advice! Re: Brushbox or Sydney Blue Gum 3Oct 03, 2011 4:43 pm I also like the Brushbox because it has cooler undertones, although it can depend on what kind of furniture you like too. And they sound like fairly reasonable prices to me - I'm no expert but the builder I work with locally has similar pricing. The Brushbox grey and salmon colours will mellow and slightly darken to light grey/browns and the reds of the Blue Gum will darken to red/browns. I have had Jarrah in our present home for 15 years and when it was initially installed the colours ranged from ox blood reds to pinky fawns. Now the reds are deep and the lighter colours are tans. It is a stunning contrast to cream leather furniture. Re: Brushbox or Sydney Blue Gum 5Nov 06, 2011 10:33 am The prices are very good, I am supplying, installing and finishing those type of timbers for around 180-200. If you want to keep the colour in the floor and not have them darken over time (yellowing) then look at the Water based finishes. Bona in particular (We just finished Kings Hall at Old Parliament House) is non-toxic and non-yellowing. Personally I prefer the Brushbox as it is lighter than the SBG. Cheers Re: Brushbox or Sydney Blue Gum 6Nov 06, 2011 10:39 am The Brushbox and Sydney Blue Gum were the two on my final list as well. In the end went for Sydney Blue Gum as the Brushbox appeared a bit washed out. Like what I got. My price was $165 per square meter, so your price is very good. However, keep in mind that mine was select grade and the lower grade would have been cheaper. I would only go select grade as I don't like "defects" in my timber flooring.
