Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 10, 2011 9:34 am I'm upto choosing my tiles and tiler. We got a measure and quote to lay 600mm porcelain floor tiles. I wanted a really thin grout line but the tiler said he would advise against it because he has jobs where the tiles are slightly bowed and are more evident with the thinner grout line. Also when the house moves, the tiles may come away from the grout. He said he will do it if I really wanted it but I will need to sign a waiver acknowledging that I am aware of what may happen. He showed me that the sample tile was very slightly bowed but said it would be more noticeable when its laid among the other tiles. Wondering has done this in there main living area and if they have come across any problems after living and walking on them for a while. Pics would be great! I want to see how noticeable this would be or if I should just go with 3mm grout in the same color as the tile. The tile in question is semi polished. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Advised by the tiler not to go with small grout line 2Sep 10, 2011 12:09 pm I agree with the tiler that 3 ml is ok but any smaller than you run the risk of sanded grout falling out and it is not due to the house moving it is due to the sanded grout can not be used in thin grout joints under 3ml , if you want smaller grout joints than unsanded grout has to be used just like they do on polished marble and travertine but unsanded grout is harder to maintain just like your shower walls. In regards what the tiler said about thin grout lines on bowed tiles does not seem right if the tile is bowed than it does not matter what grout width there is it will still show. I recall a member on here had the same issues about bowed tiles 600 x 300 never heard bowed tiles on 600 x 600. If they are bowed are you sure you want them laid? Ask the tiler is he going to screed the floor which means floor leveling compound this will stop high and low tiles it is a must on large tiles. Craig Re: Advised by the tiler not to go with small grout line 3Sep 10, 2011 5:25 pm Thanks for your reply Craig. Yes the tiler did have a look and said that he will need to use screed to level some of the areas. We are re-thinking the tile we selected and are now considering 3mm grout line. I dont think I would enjoy living in a home that has high maintenance grout. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in.
