Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Carpet and flooring 21Sep 26, 2011 6:26 pm You know you can get commercial wool carpets? See if you can have a look at some of those if you like wool. Yes commercial carpets, other than wool are hard, but also hardwearing. I must be the only person that doesn’t care about the softness of carpet. To me it’s how it performs over softness. If you’re looking for something softer than commercial the best type of carpet is a low pile, not long and fluffy, they may fall down in traffic zones. So look for short pile twist or a carpet that is looped. Also remember to ask about the underlay, upgrade if you have to, the underlay is important to the carpet. I like wool's, below is a link you might like to read if you are thinking of wool. http://lamusa.cc/clean.htm Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Carpet and flooring 22Sep 27, 2011 5:53 pm Hi Michelle, I was wondering whether you sell timber laminate products like Titan Select Longboards and Armstrong Timber Inspirations? We are thinking of installing the Titan Select Longboards (NSW Spotted Gum) throughout our house (except for bedrooms and wet areas) but haven't been able to find much information/reviews on the product. It's 12mm thick which is comforting but just not sure if it is a respected brand and so worry about how hardwearing it will be? It's supposed to come with a 20-25 year warranty but I wonder if when it came down to it whether it would actually cover what it needs to. Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks! Re: Carpet and flooring 23Sep 27, 2011 6:13 pm Hi laurajmc, we do sell Titan Select, not sure about the “long boards” but well sell boards. We also sell Armstrong. I was a bit concerned about the Titan Select when I started back at CC so I asked the store manager about the product. He says it’s a really good laminate for the price and wears well. That’s all I can tell you about it. I know we have sold some since I’ve been there and to date no complaints. I went to Choices and had a look at the options available and think a solution dyed nylon is better. i did like the eco+ godfrey hirst range made from corn sugar but it will come down to cost i guess. It's our first home but we could end up having a family there considering the amount of renovation effort we are doing. Thanks for your help! Re: Carpet and flooring 26Oct 01, 2011 1:25 pm theanonyuser Also, I'm considering buying (for the rest of the house) vinyl planks. I think they look great but are they hard wearing? Do they get damaged easily by moving heavy objects across them? I do plan to have them in the kitchen so items such as the fridge will be moved across them... Also, do you happen to have any pictures of anyone using vinyl planks in the bathroom ? I've seen plenty of pictures of them been used in general and they look great and are a very cost effective alternative to wooden flooring. If you look on the Karndean website they should have photos in the bathroom. I have a Karndean product book and they use it quite often in bathrooms. Always looks lovely, especially the higher quality of their products. Great thread Michelle! I have seen you on numerous other threads over the years. I have a question about carpet: wool vs nylon? In our current house and previous apartment we had 100% carpet and loved it. (Oh - both supplied by Carpet Court! Apartment was from the St Leonard's store, and house from the Ryde (?) store on Lane Cove Road. We had Shimmering Mood, twist pile). We also upgraded to the Platinum underlay that Carpet Court had, and loved it. (At apartment we had commercial underlay or something to reduce sound for lady below). Anyway, we are about to build a house ( eek!) and our builder doesn't have any 100% wool carpet. (We can source our own though, which is why I am researching). The only problem with our wool carpet in this house is that it piles a lot (is that the phrase? creates little clumps of dust looking wool bits). So my question Michelle, is what are the pros and cons? Wear n tear, flammability, washability??? This is normal with wool carpets. You are meant to vacuum quite regularly for, I’d say the first year so you get the loose fibres out. The best pile to get is a wool short pile twist or a loop of some sort. Personally…I prefer wool over any other fiber. Wool is a natural fire retardant; if you look after it, it will last a long time. As far as washability goes…..this needs to be done very carefully. Never rub your wool carpet when spot cleaning you must always pat dry. And use a good cloths wool wash to spot clean the carpet. Put off getting it professionally cleaned as long as possible. I had wool carpet in my last house for 22 years and had never had it professionally cleaned, I only spot cleaned! If you must have your carpets cleaned it must be with a dry system never wet the wool! The same cleaning procedure applies to Nylons. What people don’t realise is the more often they have their Nylon carpets cleaned, the more you are stripping out the products used in Nylons to protect them. What you need to do is research on the professional carpet cleaners to make sure they are doing the right thing. If you find a good one, keep him! I hope this has answered your question. I’m going to add a carpet cleaning guide to my first page so everyone can read. Yes, that is helpful (plus the tips on carpet cleaning!). I posted on my thread and got some other tips on carpet too, and all seem to be pointing towards wool as the way to go. (As for the release piles... I think maybe we didn't vacuum regularly enough! ) We might go for a loop carpet this time from what you have said ... Thanks again. We are building a new house and i am doing my head in over colourschemes. We live in a conservative area. I was thinking windspray roof, dune weatherboard and render, tristan front door, vivid white windows, dune garage door and grey pebble as a contrast but i am not sure if this is just too boring? Re: flooring questions? 40Feb 06, 2012 8:05 pm Hi Michelle, I have just visited my local store and viewed the Karndean range. I like the look of the Opus Weathered Elm or Opus Niveus but am worried about how they will hold up to a large inside dog and six year old child? Obviously there will be wear and tear but I want to know how they hold up to scratches or things being dropped etc. Is there anything you can say that will reassure me it is a good choice? Edited to add - I also wanted to know how much of a difference there is in the different ranges. I can see from the brochure that some have a thicker surface layer and extended guarantee - does this mean I should be aiming for the Art Select / Da Vinci range for better wear and tear / less plastic looking over the Van Gogh and Opus? Or is there not a huge difference?
