Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 03, 2011 12:28 pm Hi people I'm about to start organising quotes for carpets locked in to 2012 present for financing. I am overseas at the moment which makes selecting them hard. There are carpet stores here so I can get a rough idea, but selecting the actual carpet will be difficult. The new building in Perth will be part investment, part PPOR (will be living in for some time). Some questions: (1) Which material? I want to avoid cheap polypropylene I'm leaning toward a nylon or SDN. I think wool, while nice, will be overcaptilising. How is the texture of wool blends? Any recommendations? IQ500 or Smartstrand seem to be popular names here. (2) The pile is giving me the most dramas. Plush looks like it is going to be too expensive. Loop looks uncomfortable. Thinking of going twist or cut pile. Are these comfortable to touch at a reasonable price? (3) What is a good length for the pile? I have seen some ranging from 7mm to 20mm. Does this affect the feel? What about cleaning? (4) Density...I have read on here not to bother spending $$ on higher densities. Anything above 40oz seems ok. Some input appreciated. (5) Underlay...foam or rubber? It seems rubber offers a more solid feel when walking on the carpet. Is it best to upgrade the underlay, as people have posted here? (6) What is a good price for an average carpet per lineal meter? And what figures should I be looking at for total installation, including underlay? Thanks in advance. Re: Selecting carpet sight unseen 2Sep 04, 2011 2:38 pm That’s a lot of questions, so I have a few for you. Any children, how many is so? Will you be living in the house first, or will it be rented? What areas of the house are you going to carpet? It's a short cut pile that is very compact and dense (quite heavy). The reason why we chose this is because we have stairs and want this to last (not flatten) for many years. The way it was explained was that the tighter and more compact the pile, the less chance it has to move and flatten with continuous use. We used to have wool carpet because of the stain resistant factor but back then no one told us how much pilling comes up all the time. We vacuum regularly and after 5 years the fibers still come up at the edges. So it was nylon for us this time and a thick luxury dunlop underlay which makes the density of the pile feel softer under foot. We previously had plush carpet (before the wool) but I hated the shading effect - it really bothered me and it was super cheap and flattened in the hallway and high traffic areas in no time. I'm no expert but can just go by experience. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Selecting carpet sight unseen 4Sep 04, 2011 8:17 pm Thanks for the replies. Interesting. Just to reply Michelle's Q's: No kids yet, but planning to while we are living there. Living in first, probably rented later. Carpeting all bedrooms and theatre. We were thinking of upgrading just the master with a thicker pile (for a better feel), but are considering using the same throughout to simplify quotes. Went to a carpet shop here over the weekend and had a touch, and now leaning toward a SDN twist of about 8mm pile for the rooms, and about 12mm for the master. Will upgrade underlay as recommended.
