Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 28, 2011 4:56 pm PLEASE HELP!? I NEED OPINIONS... I know it comes down to personal choice but I simply cannot decide. We have decided on... Solid Spotted gum timber floor, We originally wanted gloss or semi-gloss but we can only really afford the Feature/Better grade, if we save up a bit more we could afford to buy the Select, but is it really worth it? Does it look that different when laid? Does Feature grade timber with a gloss finish look strange?! I cannot find any pics ANYWHERE on the net of feature grade timber in gloss finish, does that mean it is a big no no? We are building a modern style house and are after a timber grade and finish that looks fairly modern too. I would LOVE your opinions, and dont be shy I dont get offended! Thank you Re: SPOTTED GUM GRADE & FINISH Feature Standard Select Gloss 4Sep 10, 2011 5:47 pm Hi Rajah, We are going for select grade, matt finish solid spotted gum. Initially we were going to have jarrah and in a gloss finish. Funny how we've changed our minds over the last few months!! We are trusting our builder on this one. He had a house that he did in select & matt and so we were able to see exactly what we were getting. There is not too many show rooms with timber flooring unfortunately. Our local (VERY good) floor sander recommended matt or semi gloss. Apparently gloss is too hard to keep clean and scratches?! Re: SPOTTED GUM GRADE & FINISH Feature Standard Select Gloss 5Sep 18, 2011 1:27 pm Hi MelanieG. That is exactly the same change we made too. We initially wanted feature grade jarrah in narrow boards with a gloss finish but we have decided on feature grade spotted gum in wide boards with a semi-gloss finish- just think its suits a newer house better. Would love to see some pics when yours is done! Ours is still 4 weeks away from starting Thanks for the response, Rajah Re: SPOTTED GUM GRADE & FINISH Feature Standard Select Gloss 6Sep 18, 2011 8:06 pm We initially wanted gloss timber floors (as we loved it in our rental) but are so glad we were talked into semi gloss/matt instead. If you have kids or plan to in your new home, I would go semi-gloss or matt. Gloss has the high-end wow factor but you will be kicking yourself everytime you find a scratch or dent.
