Timber floor sanding - first (45 degree) cut

When doing the first cut, is it absolutely crutial to cut at 45 degrees? What about really narrow or extremely long (25m +) rooms?

Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same?
