Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 25, 2011 9:59 am I paid almost $100 per square metre for this timber (blackbutt classic grade) and am installing it myself. I've found that a LOT of the boards supplied had not been cut properly, it seems like the blade had been misaligned or something. They were not cut on a perfect 90 degree angle... According to http://www.buildingcommission.com.au/re ... IDE_07.pdf page 52 "Flooring is defective if it has a gap of more than 2mm between adjacent boards that extend for more than 1m. Flooring is defective if it has gaps of more than 5mm in total of three gaps between four consecutive boards." I am still disappointed Would you be happy if you paid almost $100 for just the supply of timber? Im pretty sure it would be your responsibility to check as your laying? Im not sure. Re: Do you think this is ok? 3Jul 25, 2011 11:32 am Thanks Bam. Most of the boards are like that. It would take me forever to check every single board before laying down Re: Do you think this is ok? 4Jul 25, 2011 11:42 am Are you re-cutting the boards before laying? I've never had timber arrived that is squared on the ends, always have to re-cut. Re: Do you think this is ok? 5Jul 25, 2011 11:46 am HappyCamper_au Are you re-cutting the boards before laying? I've never had timber arrived that is squared on the ends, always have to re-cut. Not unless I have to. So you are checking every single board before laying it, and cutting at both ends? Most of my boards are under 50cm long by the way. Re: Do you think this is ok? 6Jul 25, 2011 11:54 am I use a square the same as in your photo, and square off every piece of timber. Sure it takes extra time but then you don't have the gaps as you've experienced. How much have you done so far? Re: Do you think this is ok? 7Jul 25, 2011 12:00 pm So far, I've only done about 1/8 of the job. Wow. So you check and square off every single piece. Is that the standard in the timber flooring industry? Does everyone do that? Also, do you only do this in the main (living) areas or bedrooms and wardrobes as well? Re: Do you think this is ok? 8Jul 25, 2011 12:18 pm Not sure what everyone else does but I check every piece and most times they aren't square. Are all pieces of flooring less than 50cm (500mm)?? What type of saw are you using? Re: Do you think this is ok? 9Jul 25, 2011 12:34 pm No, not all are 500mm. There are lots of long ones as well, but surprisingly a large number of 500mm ones. Re: Do you think this is ok? 10Jul 25, 2011 12:50 pm If it is select timber than its common to have quite a few small pieces - part of the process of handpicking them from the feature pieces. Most of ours were small pieces too but it actually looks quite nice. We just used the longer pieces in the main area. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o254/beautiful_exa/DSCF8086.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o254/beautiful_exa/DSCF8073.jpg The gaps that you have can be putty filled, just make sure you match it to the timber as closely as possible. Its up to you whether you want to square off the edges on the rest of the job or not - if you do they will sit up against each other neatly and if you dont you will have more putty. Our guy had a drop saw and squared off each end - dont do it in the house, it makes a ridiculous mess Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! We got the most expensive grade (almost $100 psqm for the supply of timber alone) Re: Do you think this is ok? 12Jul 25, 2011 1:05 pm Bam Our guy had a drop saw and squared off each end Wow, so he had to check each board and then square off if necessary? Did he charge extra for that? Or do all installers do that? Re: Do you think this is ok? 13Jul 25, 2011 1:10 pm Grey Ironbark in Select Grade. Can you see all the smaller pieces? That was just after it had been laid so it may be difficult to tell. Dont be put off by the smaller pieces, more character Im pretty sure he just squared off each board. Drop saws have that back plate thing that you push the timber up against so it should cut it straight without needing a square. Wish I could ask hubby for you to get specifics but he'll be pretty grumpy if I keep bothering him It was included in the price of our installation, so Im assuming its a standard pratice Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: Do you think this is ok? 14Jul 25, 2011 1:14 pm Cheers for that. We are using a drop saw too and it has the back plate that you mention... the only thing is it takes a long time to square off both ends of every single board. Doh! Re: Do you think this is ok? 16Jul 25, 2011 2:00 pm If you've got a dropsaw then it will be a breeze....I was thinking it was a smaller job when you mentioned 50cm (500mm) lengths. Also if you've got expensive flooring then why not take a bit extra time and get the best results? Filling gaps like in your photos is going to spoil the floor (imho) when it could have been avoided by taking extra time to square the ends. To my way of thinking you either take the time and have square cuts and have the floor looking schmicko, or crawl around the floor with filler and a putty knife filling all the gaps. Sorry I'm not much help No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6634 Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
