Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 23, 2011 9:32 pm If you look at your floorboards where they connect width-wise, are they perfectly close together or are there small (1-3mm) gaps between some of them? I am just curious to know what is acceptable and what's not Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 2Jul 23, 2011 9:46 pm Ours pretty much touch. There are places with a small gap but Im pretty sure they get filled with a timber putty. Our floors are getting sanded Monday, so should be able to let you know then Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Ten months on, I can see a few boards with gaps large enough to fit 2 pieces of standard office paper into them. We have a very large area of timber flooring. A gap of more than 2 millimetres between adjacent boards will be considered a defect. The floor has been dried out really well before installation. Also left to settle for several weeks before coating (but I don't think this part mattered in the end). It's now about 6-7 months old. Overtime boards will shrink/expand. Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 8Jul 25, 2011 10:22 am Trinity Ours were all completely flush when installed, sanded and polished. Most of our gaps are smaller than 1mm but are still very noticable Considering I paid almost $100 per square metre for supply only I am not very happy This is what it looks like: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 9Jul 25, 2011 11:15 am that must be heartbreaking for you! Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 10Jul 25, 2011 12:36 pm Oh hang on, you were talking about gaps when 2 boards are butt joined, not along the boards!! Any of these little gaps should be filled, and it is "safe" to do because boards won't move in that direction, they only move (grow and shrink) along the long length of the boards. Phew! Maybe you just ask the installer what happens with these and I'm pretty sure he will tell you point blank that they fill them. They won't really be noticeable. But they could have pressed the boards harder against each other (most of the time) so you don't even have these gaps. Usually there is a little gap when they cut off the "end match" so they don't get the side cut off 100% square ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 11Jul 25, 2011 12:40 pm Thank you Bam and Lex. Yes, the gaps are only where 2 boards are butt joined, not along the boards. But still... not happy Jan. Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 12Jul 25, 2011 5:10 pm tested I would not be happy. That does not look like an appropriate installation. Re: Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 13Jul 25, 2011 6:27 pm Now I've seen your pic....yeah, don't panic. Looks like your boards are not filled, sanded, polished yet. We have a couple of ends of boards that were filled (less than a mm). It's really no big deal. Just check that they fill and sand smooth. You won't notice in the overall scheme of things once it's all complete. Do your floorboards sit perfectly next to each other? 14Jul 25, 2011 7:10 pm You're not alone.
