Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 10, 2011 9:36 pm I have just purchased some gorgeous ceramic tiles to redo my kitchen floor covering. However after online research regarding laying them and ripping up the masonite that I have on the floor currently, I am starting to think that I may not be able to use tiles at all?? Please help me out. Can you lay tiles over a hardwood floor (this is the bottom layer of flooring under the masonite which did have ugly lino on it that I pulled up ages ago). I think I was told that the wood is oak. Re: ceramic tiles over hardwood? 2Jul 10, 2011 9:49 pm We did it in our house that was on stumps solid flooring,we ripe up old tiles and masonite.Tiler used a special glue i think to level floor and fix tiles, then he did the grout.I had it down about 10 years, with movement [we have a clay soil]I sometimes had to redo grout as it would crack. Our house was 30 years old never had cracks inside, must have been the timber I think.I wouldn't do it again,I would pay extra and have the masonite put down.Hope this is of some help Re: ceramic tiles over hardwood? 3Jul 12, 2011 11:41 am You can not lay tiles on hard wood floors if there is to much deflection or movement otherwise grout will just end up falling out or tiles will crack. The best thing to do is by either screwing in or nailing down tile underlay first than you use a rubber adhesive to bond the tiles. Just make sure the tile underlay is free off duct use a rung out rag than wait until fully dry. Hope this helps. Craig Hi All.
