Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 09, 2011 9:15 pm Hi, I have been looking at tiles today for our ensuite & bathroom. I only need tiles for walls which will go all the way to the ceiling (2.7mtr ceilings) floors will be polished concrete in a charcoal sort of colour. Originally in my head I wanted a dark tile on the walls too, was thinking a honed bluestone or similar. Found 2 that I quite liked, one is a 300 x 600 natural slate tile in black (it's not jet black, more of a dark charcoal) & another one that is 440 x 660, which is very similar in colour, & I really loved the size (minimal grout and all that). The guy at the tile shop thinks it will be too dark & suggested maybe only 1 wall in the dark & the other walls in a white gloss in 300 x 600 tile. Both rooms are quite long & narrow 5m x 2.3m and fixtures are quite minimal & all white (wall hung toilet, wall hung cupboard 450mm deep, with 2mtr long mirrored shaving cabinets). Set up is sort of like this; Dbl Vanity, toilet, glass shower screen, bath. They are all off the same wall if you get my drift, at the end wall above the bath will be a large window to let in lots of light. I was quite sure of my choice but now I'm not sure. Does anyone have all dark tiles and could share a pic & tell me if they are happy with their choice?? Thanks Bec Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 2Jun 10, 2011 4:15 pm We had the same thinking recently. Originally we wanted to do all dark walls and floor - we're quite sure about it, we wanted that moody luxury hotel feel. Our bathroom is 2.4mx3m so fairly small but we have a big window that lets north facing sun in on one wall and another wall has a double cavity slider so there was plenty of light. Plus we are doing one wall from vanity to ceiling in just mirror to reflect the light. But you always wonder if it is going to be too dark still. Then we had the idea of doing just a feature wall in dark and the rest in a lighter colour (not white as we don't like white tiles). But all our cabinetry, vanity, bath, toilet are white so then you are thinking about introducing multiple colours into the space and start wondering if it will look too busy for such a small space. We would find a nice feature wall we liked and not the complementary tile. We were going round and round in circles with ideas until we came across a gorgeous travertine wall in a tile display centre. It won us over and we ended up going for a lighter colour than planned with an italian crema travertine that we got an amazing price on from a wholesaler. We haven't finished the bathroom yet so I can't share a pic with you but check the progress of it on our website if you like http://www.ourdiydream.com Some inspiration for you as you think about the dark bathroom: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Have fun, Michelle Check out our renovation in progress at http://www.ourdiydream.com Follow us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/ourdiydream Check out what we are 'pinning' http://pinterest.com/ourdiydream/ Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 3Jun 11, 2011 2:27 pm Thanks for that Michelle, Wow you reno is huge!! I love the tiles you have gone with & what a bargain for them & the crate of slightly damaged ones, well done. Really liked the pics you put up, though they look like they might be a little bronzy in real life still gives me an idea on the 'finished look', we're the same 2m of one wall will have mirrored shaving cabinets & our bench will be very similar to the pic you have posted except white bench tops. I think i'll just go with what I originally wanted, a bit of drama will be good, our kitchen is all white & walls throughout are 'white on white' so I think I need a bit of colour elsewhere. Thanks again Michelle Bec Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 4Jun 16, 2011 8:10 pm Can't wait to see what it looks like! Love it! Ensuite colours were the easiest to decide. Hardest were the other wet rooms. If you have a look at 'dollarz house' thread on here you will find some pics of the ensuite. Dark tiles will look stunning. I'd say 2 thumbs up for it! It's your home not the tile shops nor the colour consultant so if you have an idea/vision go for it. It was like when the painters were painting our house I think they thought there was too much white...and people I know who said not to have the ensuite black. The reactions of people when you say black are quite interesting. When they saw it they loved it. Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 6Jun 17, 2011 9:05 am We are having a black ensuite, tiles are shown in my thread but I'm on my phone so can't do the link. I figured the same as you- it's got a big window plus 2 big mirrors over the double vanity plus all the white fittings it'll be ok. As I've not started buildin yet I have no pics but dollarz helped make me feel better about the choice. my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 7Jun 17, 2011 7:16 pm For the one dark feature wall and the other 3 white you can look at my thread. http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/netadelle/Build/IMG_1259.jpg http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/netadelle/Build/IMG_1310.jpg I'd go all dark, from your description it sounds luxurious! Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 8Jun 17, 2011 7:24 pm We'd have loved polished concrete, but had to settle on this floor tile instead. LOVE the pic of the room above, its gorgeous! our layout is quite similar Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 9Jun 17, 2011 7:47 pm We have gone with white on walls and dark on floor. We have chosen dark grout on floor to match the tiles. Just wondering if people have gone for dark or black grout with dark tiles also. Sorry for hijacking the thread. Building the Benham with Rawson Homes in Western Sydney. Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 10Jun 17, 2011 8:16 pm We also chose dark grout too to match the tiles and where the textured white ones are running verticle we got a colour o match these instead of having black. Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 11Jun 17, 2011 8:18 pm We were originally thinking dark on walls and floors but ended up going dark floors and one feature wall, then gloss white 300x600 on the remaining walls, with vanity etc all white. Now i wish we had've gone all dark with the tiles as there's too much white... Go with what your first instinct was, if that's all dark then just do it!! Re: Dark Tiles in Bathrooms 12Jun 17, 2011 9:51 pm We are using dark tiles as a feature wall in our ensuite & ivory coloured tiles for the rest. I've seen it in a display home & it looked stunning. Would love to show you a pic of our bathroom but we don't even have a slab yet! These are the tiles we are using, both 300x600 rectified porcelain laid horizontal to ceiling We are also using the dark on the floor Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As for grout, we have colour matched the grout to the tile, brown tiles have brown grout & ivory tiles have a white grout (white looked better than cream) Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Hi All, I am looking to go with tiles instead of laminate timber flooring throughout my living areas for my new build (Ashbury 29 - Henley).
