Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 14, 2008 8:36 am Do you take your shoes off when you go into the house? And do you make visitors do the same?
We don't. We've always lived in rental properties so I guess we don't care about the floor coverings as much (and clearly the previous tenants haven't been too particular either). Our parents don't do it so we didn't grow up with the habit. But I have lots of friends who do. And I have a couple of Japanese friends who expect it and provide slippers for you to put on . I can see the logic in it, not only from the viewpoint of protecting the floor coverings but also from a hygiene perspective. My daughter is crawling and is always picking up things off the floor and putting them in her mouth. Talk about gutter immunity . Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 2Jan 14, 2008 8:46 am I always take my 'yard' shoes off at the door - in fact I have a pair at the front and the back door, but them I'm likely to be walking in grass cuttings, dirt & mud, or other muck in the backyard, or sawdust, grease, oil & paint in the garage!
If we go out, or I come home from work, I generally walk into the house with 'clean shoes' but take them straight off once I'm at the wardrobe. Our visitors will often take their shoes off as a matter of habit from their own place, but we don't enforce it in fact we encourage visitors to feel comfortable enough to leave their shoes on - most do, but some see the clean tiles & grimace..... If we had floor coverings that 'hid' the dirt a bit better than the almost white tiles that we have in the entry, family, kitchen, dining & hallways, then I guess you wouldn't notice the 'starkness' of the floor & feel compelled to avoid leaving a tiny spot of dirt from your shoes.... Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 5Jan 14, 2008 9:02 am We do 'cos we live there. And after a long day's work you just want to kick them shoes off!
Regarding guests - we've never asked but they just take them off themselves. Must be that whole mentality with 'new house means no shoes'. I dunno?! I'm not too fussed if they do wear shoes in the house as long as they wipe them at the door and don't walk on the carpeted areas. Having said that, if it's raining outside and you get mud all over your shoes then it's a given you take your shoes off. Thats true with the guests - they just do, I dont recall actually asking anyone!! Having said that, we normally do at other peoples houses too....just having a little respect for others!! Actually, a study in indoor environment was done at Murdoch University several years ago by Dr Peter Kemp and others. It demonstrated a definite positive outcome where a shoes off policy was maintained. Specifically, it measured fungal spore counts, and showed how much of a difference it makes. If you can follow it, you will do well, enjoy a healthier home, and make housework easier. Ash. Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 8Jan 14, 2008 9:28 pm Good question.
Always take our shoes off at home. Even make the kids do it... Sad I know. Also if we go to a friends / familys house, even if they're wearing shoes, always take ours off. Force of habit I guess... ps. Always bring the Mockys over in winter Mike. My Blog... http://ahouseonthehill.blogspot.com/ Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 9Jan 14, 2008 9:43 pm We don't ask anyone to take their shoes off (even on carpet) - and I don't generally do it when I go to someones house either (unless asked).
I suppose its a cultural thing - I've grown up wearing shoes wherever and whenever, so why stop now? Personally I cant stand walking into a brand new house and seeing a pile of dirty shoes at the front door. Also have to consider the 'clean-shoes' versus 'sweaty-socks' issue. Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 10Jan 15, 2008 10:15 pm I tend to do it on a house by house basis.
But definiately no yard boots on in the house. I got into the shoes off habit when I was living in Sweden. EVERYONE takes their shoes off - has lots to do with snow etc coming in on your snow terrain tread boots. It's a good habit - but I leave it up to my friends decide - if they notice it's shoes off please - and it's appreciated. Steve Re: Do you have a 'shoes off in the house' rule? 11Jan 15, 2008 10:42 pm I grew up in a "no shoes inside" house, so my parents have that as their common practice. Matt's parent's don't - they walk their shoes (no matter what's on them) everywhere. Seeing both sides - its "no shoes" for our house.
Having said that - I don't mind if visitors (or ourselves) wear shoes on the tiles - easy cleaned... but I would ask them to remove them if they were going onto the carpets though. I know how filthy in laws carpets get (they were FERAL, but they had a lot replaced about 1yr ago - and it's already grotty looking). If I go to other peoples' house I always either take them off, or if they insist I leave them on, but more for them than me... I like going bare! Ray. We have indoor and outdoor slippers each... and we have some spare ones for our guests, esp. relatives. For non-relatives though, as they are not aware of our "no shoes" policy, we just allow them to enter the house with shoes... but when they see us walking bare-footed, they normally remove their shoes. On carpets, we walk bare-foot. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
