Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 21, 2011 5:53 pm Hi all, I am in the midst of getting my house prepared for an interior paint job. I am helping the painter out by cutting the carpet away from the skirting boards so it can be painted correctly. All the flooring will be replaced later in the year. I assumed the lino in my kitchen would be all throughout the house even under the carpetedsections of the house. But to my surprise last night the lino runs through the kitchen, lounge, hall and walk in wardrobe in main bedroom. The three bedrooms have carpet directly laid over the foundation concrete slab~~~ Although it does have a layer of underlay I was shocked to discover this. There are some cracks in the slab and this makes sense as I did feel some risen bits under the flooring as I would walk around the room! I am getting Armstrong rhino planks laid over lino in kitchen, lounge and hall - then fresh carpet in the bedrooms. Does anyone have any suggestions for my rooms?????? Should I get some ply wood/masonite put ontop of slab before new underlay and carpet is laid?????? Any suggestions would be great as I dont have a better half to help me out!!!!! Cheers Re: What's hiding under the carpet? 2May 22, 2011 11:59 pm It's standard to just lay underlay and carpet straight onto the concrete slab. However as you say you could feel the cracks in the slab, it sounds like the cracks must be quite significant - so yes you may need to seal the cracks and lay something under the carpets to smooth it out if the slab cracks are causing levelling issues. Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16122 I want to build a bigger driveway (without a nature strip) than has been approved under my CDC.
