We have a very messy baby so the carpet needs to be hard wearing and capable of withstanding stains from food, crayons, wee, etc. Can anyone suggest a particular style of carpet that would be suitable? Or one that we should definitely avoid? I know that parenting has many challenges, and sometimes things are difficult, BUT............. PREVENTION is the key here! Its up to you to manage your home and family. There's no such thing as a carpet that 'withstand' those accidents. If they happen, they must be properly cleaned up. Example: Children should be taught from the earliest age that wandering around a house with food & drinks is not on. Meals are at a certain place (dining area with hard floors). After meals, wash sticky hands before going to other rooms etc. Keep hard floors clean after meals and generally, to prevent sticky stuff being walked into carpets. Biological accidents (wee, poo, vomit) are best cleaned by professional carpet cleaning technicians. Having said that, some carpets are more suitable than others. You might prefer low profile solution dyed nylon (SDN) or polypropylene carpets. Sorry, my advice still sounds quite blunt but that's what I read in your post. Maybe I'm quite wrong in how I read it. But that's just me! Ash. Hi, I was going to use Godfrey Hirst's nylog range that offers their highest level of wear resistance, anti-static treatment, lifetime insect protection, 10yr soil resistant guarante, 5yr stain blovck guarantee. The actual carpet I was looking at is called Metaphor and it was about $52 /m2 including bridgestone gold underlay and installation labour from CarpetRight and this is in Sydney. Again I have not used it yet so I cannot speak from experience but it maybe of some help to you. I myself have not decided what to choose for my bedrooms yet. When I was a kid my parents had Huga (sp?) carpet tiles and I remember them being very ugly and rough on the knees but capable of copping a beating. Mum thought they were very practical with kids because if one got damaged, they just replaced it with another one. Will keep a look out for the polypropylene carpet. Re: Looking for hard wearing stain resistant carpet 6Jan 13, 2008 12:42 pm Thanks Cathski,
Sure it makes sense to choose a carpet most suitable for its expected service life. I just cringe when people look for all sorts of warranties etc, because they can give the consumer the feeling that they can abuse the carpet, and it'll magically stay clean & stain-free. It can be a false sense of security. I have been involved with some carpet warranty programs. Most problems occur when people don't clean accidents up promptly or correctly. They fail to read warranty info or conform to it, and then cry foul because they have a problem (that is caused by their neglect). To be fair to consumers though, many carpet marketing campaigns have been to blame for fueling this ignorance (Pro Hart etc). Back to your carpet choice... A carpet that is fully synthetic (both the pile and secondary backing are polypropylene or nylon pile with polypropylene secondary backing) will probably be most suitable. This is because the materials will have minimal absorbency, resist staining and be more tolerant of chemicals. Heuga carpet tiles (now called Interface) are extremely durable and suited to heavy duty commercial environments. You'll find them expensive. Have it professionally cleaned at least annually. Ash.
