Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 07, 2010 12:14 pm We've just received our first quote for new timber flooring. We have 71sqm to cover & our quote was $8900. This is for Spotted Gum laid by this company. Does this sound pricey - surely there are other companies out there not this expensive. Can anyone recommend a company? We are also maybe considering just buying it raw and laying it ourselves. Re: Timber Flooring Sydney - I think our quote is too $$$ 4May 07, 2010 4:19 pm For a straightforward job 71 sqm of standard grade 19mm Spotted Gum I would charge somewhere around $12000 or about $170 per sqm. Direct stick onto concrete and overlay onto ply are generally more expensive again. Sounds a good price to me, but Sydney is cheaper than Canberra. Can you see other work this mob have done, what grade timber flooring is it and what type of finish are they looking at? Re: Timber Flooring Sydney - I think our quote is too $$$ 6May 07, 2010 5:11 pm Yeh I just calculated how much mine is per sqm - ~$157 for 14x83mm solid spotted gum laid on 15mm ply, including skirting boards. Your quote might be for laminate or engineered or something? Re: Timber Flooring Sydney - I think our quote is too $$$ 8May 14, 2010 10:52 pm bozzabonnici Thanks for the replies guys, it for a hardwood timber floor T & G. The timber itself would be around $80 per m2, plywood - $45 per 2.88 m2, add about $300 for anchors and staples, and at least $6 per m2 for the coating... On top of it you have labour which, as I found, would be around $70 per m2 (fix plywood, fix timber, 3xSnding, 3xCoats of finish).... Your $157 sounds quite reasonable. You could probably save some money by supplying the timber yourself (should be able to gett $10-20 per m2 off but not necessarily). However, be ready to spend about 3 hours to carry it inside... The biggest savings is to do it yourself but this is quite a hard work. ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. Yes and no I reckon. As a tradie I get a 20% discount from suppliers and generally I will pass on 10-15% of those savings to the punters. So in that instance it is cheaper (In Canberra anyway) for the installer to supply the timber. However if you are willing to do a foot slog you can also find some good discounted flooring packs around (remember to add in freight and delivery). I would also consider reject or cover grade packs - they are much cheaper and come up great with a little putty and filler. You could ring the myriad of mills up and down the North coast direct to see if you can find a run of flooring they are looking to clear. There is a spot in Canberra where you can buy 80mm hardwood flooring in 40 sqm packs for around $1000 per pack or about 20-25 per sqm - but a lot of people baulk at it because they are not confident enough purchasing these type of packs without the input of a someone with flooring nous Cheers Re: Timber Flooring Sydney - I think our quote is too $$$ 10May 18, 2010 5:45 am namtrak ebyelyakov .............You could probably save some money by supplying the timber yourself (should be able to gett $10-20 per m2 off but not necessarily)........... As a tradie you have to add 10% GST and add 30% tax on top of your labour By doing this myself the only loosing party are NSW State and Federal Governments who won't receive a penny of tax money as there is no tax on DIY Moreover, "Money saved" = "money earned doubled (as we don't pay taxes on money we did not pay)" which is my case. I personally by doing research very well in advance saved a lot. 3 truck-loads of delivery costed me $150 I should add that another thing is time - personal time has to be sacrificed. Since I started working on my floor I've been doing 12-15 hours days and it is not necessarily easy (but I'm loving it - probably the first time in last 11 years I'm doing something physical). I could not care less about using my annual leave for this as I have nothing to spend it on anyway - finishing a house means not much money left and this means no overseas trips for a few years which means nothing to do with the leave ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. I have two quote for raw spotted gum in select grade over plywood. One from a small operator who barely speaks English but is very keen and has provided a reference ($130/sqm installed and finished) and one from a much larger operator at $200/sqm !!!! any thoughts.... Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 16118 No. It's not original.
