Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 19, 2011 6:10 pm I need help please I've seen a few tilers and asked them what type of grout should be applied to floor tiles (polished porcelain). ALL of them gave me different answers with different reasons! So, instead of calling more and more tilers so I can count their votes, can you tell me what type/colour of grout do you have And, of course, do you have any issues with it? Thanks! FIL has similar tiles and put ivory grout, looked awesome at first but the grout has gone feral now and looks very dirty Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 3May 19, 2011 6:52 pm I used Ardex FS-DD grout, selecting the closest colour to the tiles. I like it! They also make the same colour silicone for corners and where benches meet tiles. All very nice. Anyone else out there with a little longer experience? I think all grout will look immaculate in tthe first 6 to 12 months, but after that, I guess that issues can start. I had one tiler saying that only cement will always keep its colour true, all other grout will discolour or get dirty. He also said that coloured grout will fade when used externally. The second tiler warned not to use coloured grout because the job can look patchy because the colour of the grout will not be consistent . I'm guessing that he had a problem with mixing it and he didn't do it properly, so he got a patchy job!?! Now he only uses white grout (for floors!!) The third tiler said he'd use colour grout, but at the time I didn't know I should ask about this a bit more! So, what to believe?? And once the coloured / white grout gets all muddy and "discolours", can it be cleaned?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 8May 20, 2011 2:56 pm We used coloured grout in all our rooms to match the tiles and haven't had any issues after 2 years. The only problem we had was a very dark brown grout in the powder room to match the wall tiles and it was patchy. The tiler took it all out and did it again and it's fine. Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 9May 20, 2011 7:27 pm Does anyone know of a good way to remove red clay stains from tile grout? The military in all their brilliance put cream colored tile with cream colored grout into our housing unit which under the one inch of grass we have in the yard is red clay. I've mopped it with everything I can think of. I've even gone as far as to Clorox bleach pen the grout but even that only dulls the red and is entirely to tedious to have to do to 400 square feet. Thank goodness it's only the living room and part of the kitchen. Please help I'm losing my mind. http://www.fresh-environment.com Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 10May 21, 2011 3:52 pm Thanks guys ... Suh, I can't remember your tiles any more ... any chance of a closer-up (and a further away )? I'm still strongly leaning towards coloured grout. I think patchy grout can be a one-off accident, but can be a workmanship issue too. I think all these coloured grouts have to be mixed up well with water?? so uneven mixing may cause patchiness?? And what a beautiful bunch of tiles you have! I love that you used a variety of tiles, I did the same, but pitty I didn't go bolder as I love those new patterned/flowery tiles but had no idea how to use them! suh suh So, if I get tiles with a light beige/grey pattern, I should probably go a shade darker with the grout, in case it gets lighter after grouting. White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 13May 21, 2011 9:38 pm I noticed in all areas the grout did dry lighter but I have to admit, I'm kind of pleased as it has given the tiles some definition rather than being one big block of colour which is what I was aiming for initially. You don't want the grout darker than the tiles either. Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 14May 21, 2011 10:06 pm So right! I also don't want the all-one-tile look In the old days (aka last year ) I actually planned to have white grout on the floor!! But tastes change ... so now I'm in the coloured grout phase My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 15Oct 27, 2011 9:32 pm I personally think the same coloured grout as tiles looks wrong unless its white tiles with white walls. I have said it before Grey or Neutral which is cement colour on the floor & white on the walls. If you want to reduce cleaning, staining etc use additives like Davco Grout Cure or you can go to an Epoxy like Davco Epoxy Grout, Ardex W.A. or Ardex Abapoxy. Re: White grout, Coloured grout, Sand/Cement grout?? 16Oct 28, 2011 8:38 pm I read on additives quickly today and it seems that Davco Grout Cure is for cement based grouts (and with my very limited understanding of tiling, I think cement based means those wider joins and not suitable for polished porcelain. Another one is Davco 4 in 1, whihc I don't really understand if it can be used on pol/porc). Can someone shed some light onto this? (I only read on Davco brands). Back to grout colour - I also don't like to see (in MY place) same coloured grout (and I mean same or very similar). The tiles that we have selected could go with either Antique White or Silver Grey (both Davco colours), but but but because our benchtop is more grey than beige, I think we might as well go with the Silver Grey one Does anyone know what th I'm talking about ?
