Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 17, 2011 4:09 pm We're looking at flooring for living area, kitchen, dining, entry and hallway. We would love timber but with a rather big inside dog we're wondering if this is the best way to go. Does anyone have any recommendations? I bought a nonslip runner from Bunnings to put throughout the house for her so she does not slip and it is easy for her to get up. When the time comes for her to go into the place never to return (don't get me started - will cry my eyes out!!)... and have another baby doggie.... we are not sure what to get - in wearing aspect - wood or something else as we definitely don't want tiles in the house - can't stand grout! ?polished concrete is a possible option.... Re: Timber or tile with inside dog? 3May 17, 2011 4:29 pm this was a big influencing factor with us as well...we have two dogs (13 and 11). my 13 yo golden retriever is quite arthritic in his advancing years and really struggled to get up on tiles at our old house (they were glossy finish). I really like the look of timber floors but DP was against it because of the amount of upkeep and scratching that would likely occur (dogs, furniture moving, eventually kids, my high heels!!! lol) We opted for a matt tile as they are less slippery with rugs to be used in the main living areas. We have tiles in this house, much better for them. We selected a few different tiles when it came to selections... took them home and layed them down to see if they marked badly from the dogs (a few did) and to make sure they didn't find them slippery (again a few they did find too slippery). Helped us pick the right ones. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Timber or tile with inside dog? 6May 23, 2011 7:04 am We had tiles at the rental we were recently in and she loved them because they were cool for her to lay on. But I hadn't thought about when my Roxy gets older as she is 6yo now but I can imagine tiles are going to be hard for her getting up and down. I was speaking with a flooring professional on weekend and they said it wasnt the wood that scratches, it was the coating you put on to seal it. If you get the buy already done stuff that you click in, then there isnt much room for sanding it back if it does scratch so if we went with timber we would have to go the real deal. Just got our floors repolished recently (unrelated to dogs, flood damage) and there has been no score marks from the dogs at all - and its a lot easier to vacuum hair off wood floors then carpet. On that note, leather furniture is great for dog hair as well. Slipping is an issue with the older dogs, but polished wood is definitely better for them than porcelain. If you lay runner and have little doggie steps for the couch/chairs then they quickly learn to stick to those. I saw mention on a USA forum of a non skid coating for polished floors, no idea if you can get it in Oz. Re: Timber or tile with inside dog? 9May 23, 2011 9:18 pm We are having solid timber in our new home & we have 2 young children & a labrador. I would say make sure your dogs nails are cut short & also no doggie games in the house, our lab is a bit lazy these days in her old age but years ago she would look like Scooby Doo when she tried to run for a ball but couldn't get grip on the floor hate to think what that would do to timber... Im thinking of laminate floorboards on my new house.. Everything i read on homeone says i shouldnt. My parents have floating laminate floorboards, with a border collie and golden retriever floor boards still look good after 5 years. No matter what i hear i always hear a different story. Mark Re: Timber or tile with inside dog? 11May 27, 2011 8:48 am Thanks for your feedback everyone. It's great to hear everyone elses experiences. I hadn't though of how tiles would fair on an aging dog so these are all things to consider in our decision. Thanks a bunch!!
