Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 10, 2011 9:05 pm Hi all I am somewhat confused about what underlay we need for our 19mm solid hardwood floors upstairs to reduce noise transmission (especially footfall) to downstairs. We have a timber frame covered in plywood. Can you lay an underlay directly onto that and then secret nail/top nail the hardwood floor? Or is there some other method? Most websites talk about laying onto concrete....not applicable to a second storey. Also, any advice as to which acoustic underlay homeoners have found to be the best value? TIA Loretta Re: Underlay for 19mm hardwood timber floors upstairs 3May 19, 2011 5:00 pm Hi Loretta, In the ATFA manual (and in Boral's too) there is a chapter on laying on particleboard (although a bit confusingly assembled, as it's not clear what to do when) ... Anyway, if you use any "loose" underlay, you then can't glue the boards. Normal practice (for Syd) is to nail and glue. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
