Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 05, 2011 11:26 pm hi, went to choose colours today. Looked at carpets. In this forum have read that wool and nylon combo is best. They only had ONE carpet that had wool. The rest was nylon / polypropelene (excuse spelling). Then I asked about underlay having read here that rubber is best. She showed us rubber underlay which had waves/grooves and she says she was told if you spill water etc on carpet, it gets trapped in the grooves . She had something called 'comfort choice' - made by dunlopillo which they suggested as better. Then it came to buying from them or post install. She explained that if we do our own, they will only tack on the skirtings so that means after we get carpet laid, we have to nail the skirtings, fill the holes and paint them... Seems a lot of work and I dont think we get a credit for them not doing the skirtings properly... Have very little time to do running around etc.. so hoping you can all save me a lot of time here! When it comes to pricing ... from most expensive to cheapest....in which order does it fall when comparing tiles/carpets/vinyl/wood... Does anyone have any opinion on whether to let builder do or us do? thanks in advance Re: carpet / flooring questions 2May 07, 2011 10:12 am I don't know why wool/nylon is best but you can get good quality wool or nylon carpets, polyprop is something I would stay away from. "She showed us rubber underlay which had waves/grooves and she says she was told if you spill water etc on carpet, it gets trapped in the grooves" - that makes no sense since the grooves go on the underside. as far as skirting goes, there is no reason not to fully install it because the underlay and carpet will cover the gap under the skirting anyway, you dont take your skirting off just to replace your carpet, the carpet gets installed up against it. I had freshly painted my skirtings when I got carpet installed at my house and I checked it after the install and there was not a single spot of damage to it. I think it's a good idea to buy the best carpet you can afford, if you buy something cheap you'll be replacing it sooner. Re: carpet / flooring questions 3May 07, 2011 10:23 am Also depends on your personal circumstances. We have three small children so for us solution dyed nylon was the way to go. Very hardwearing, easy to clean should something spill, minimal sun bleaching and extremely soft underfoot. Others like wool. For us wool was never a strong contender - had pure wool sisal in another home, too hard when kids are wrestling plus held every stain (think cordial etc). Some things are worth waiting for. Re: carpet / flooring questions 4May 07, 2011 10:33 am Thanks so much Piscean. Pleased to hear about the skirtings...that was a big issue and sets my mind at ease. Kyton, she did also mention solution dyed nylon... are you happy with yours in terms of quality/longevity/comfort...just everyone I hear talks 'wool' . When I looked at samples of the solution dyed nylon, I could not tell what the composition was....so I guess lookswise, hard to tell the difference. Please tell me what sort of underlay you used. Did you let the builders do yours or did you do it post build? Thanks again for your responses. Re: carpet / flooring questions 5May 07, 2011 10:37 am Tracey - we did it ourselves, builder went @rse up before the house was finished LOL. Whatever the best underlay was that was what we got - one request from DH was to have extremely soft carpet / underlay underfoot. We had nylon in our first home we built. Again loved it but we did experience sun fading near large windows / sliding doors hence the SDN this time to negate the chances of it happening again. We wouldn't personally choose anything else with kids - no stressing when something is spilt, just mop it straight up. Some things are worth waiting for. 1 15758 1 11009 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 6595 |
