Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 26, 2007 1:59 pm Hi
I want to raise the floor of my sunken lounge (4mx4m) and lay floor boards throughout the house. Can anyone tell me the best and most economical way on doing this? Any ideas of costs would also be appreciated and the type of tradesman I need to contact. Thanks Melissa Re: How to raise sunken lounge and add floor boards 2Dec 27, 2007 1:22 pm How high do you need to raise the floor? A friend had her sunken floor filled with concrete to level it. When I said I wanted to do the same and then put floor boards down, she suggested I might not need concrete. I want to find out some options so I can decide the best one for me. Obviously, the more economical the better. But I want it to be effective. I was wondering how a carpenter/builder could fill it / add a floor without concrete. Would it be hollow? Would I tell it was hollow when walking on it? It is just one step down, so I am guessing it is about 200mm in height. All ideas welcome. Re: How to raise sunken lounge and add floor boards 7Dec 29, 2007 1:41 pm Melissa, no one has asked you yet, so i need to clarify.... are you on stumps or a slab?
If a slab, then i would say concrete it to fill it in, to keep everything the same (the sound under your feet- i mean) If on stumps, then a timber frame with boards/yellowtongue on top. Then it shouldn't matter (re: noise) if it's only one step high...although you could insulate underneath the timber floor to deaden the noise perhaps??? Just my thoughts??? Re: How to raise sunken lounge and add floor boards 8Dec 29, 2007 3:12 pm One step?
That’s good; your builder could possibly just lay beams down, and the flooring on that. Depending on the floor, real timber or laminate flooring. Either way, it’s not going to cost you the expense of your girlfriend by having concrete poured in. You will notice that most timber floors have a drum sound to them anyway, you built up area will have a slightly loader drumming noise. Put a rug down that will help with the drum. I'd probably just fill the cavity with insulation batts or similar. If the rest of the house is on a slab you can lay hardwood battens at the same finished height as the joists to ensure one floor level. Make sure there is a moisture barrier between the concrete and floor. ok thanks - yes was wondering if that should have been listed as Option Three! 2 7741 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits. There's only one… 7 12773 |
