Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 16, 2011 12:07 pm Hi all. Currently the flooring on the lower level of our house is a mixture of good tiles (rumpus), really bad tiles (study), horrible lino (toilet) and peeling paint (garage). We are going to get the whole lot resurfaced and at the moment all options are on the table, except for polished croncrete due to complications with the study. We're getting quotes for an epoxy/polyurea floor for the garage. I've seen many websites offer this type of flooring for garages but they rarely mention installing it into other rooms in the house. Why is this? If an epoxy floor can survive having a hot car sitting on it then surely it is hard enough for general use within the home? Thanks. Re: Epoxy floor for garage, how about other rooms? 6Mar 18, 2011 10:37 pm Many epoxys and polyureas are VOC free and a whole bunch more are VOC compliant. We don't see a lot of epoxy floors here in Australia compared to North America. In general, what we see here is of low quality or just a second-rate installation. If builders, architects, specifiers, etc. were better educated on the benefits of these applications we would have a lot of home owners opting for these seamless floor alternatives. Elite Crete Systems are the industry leaders and are now available here in Australia. A competent installer is going to check the floor for hydrostatic pressure before application. Depending on the extent of off gassing, if any, you can install a "vapour barrier" or choose to use a breathable sealer. The original poster asked about interior flooring options, interior floors for the most part are in a controlled environment. Re: Epoxy floor for garage, how about other rooms? 11Mar 19, 2011 9:27 am Ok then 'coated epoxy' floors... Have you ever heard of 'sick building syndrome'? A controlled environment like a loungeroom or Kitchen, small doses are worse than big doses, because it accumulates without notice. Lets all be equal on this, I mean to cause no ill effect on your business since it is clear this is your business. There are many VOC free epoxys and almost all decorative concrete overlays are VOC free. In most cases it comes down to the choice of sealers if the floor will be VOC free or VOC compliant.
