Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 15, 2011 11:39 am Hi Everyone, I am doing some research into getting our floors re-done for when we move in. Since it has been a building site the poor floors are in a terrible state and I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on how they have found Tung Oil vs Poly coatings. The floor has previously had a poly coat that my husband did, but since the floor has been patched with the reno it needs some love (and we are getting a professional in). Any opinions, thoughts, preferences or advice? Cheers! ML Re: Original Brushbox Floor - Tung Oil or Poly? 2Mar 15, 2011 12:37 pm My brother has polyurethaned timber floors. Unfortunately, these will need to be re-sanded & re-polished again & again over the years...........even though they are very house proud & careful with the floor I believe that the old poly layer needs to be sanded off before re-polishing - big job We had tung oil applied to our sydney bluegum floors in our busy family/kitchen areas with 3 kids & just loved it. It took a beating over the years. Naturally, it would get scuffed in busy areas but a quick application of tung oil with a string mop & it came up like new - glossy and rich in colour once again - no need for sanding. Also, we were advised against polyurethane by a couple of timber flooring suppliers. They said that sometimes the floorboards would split (go pop in the night) apparently because the poly didn't allow the boards to expand & contract. True ? I remember reading your thread ages ago during your build. I think you have hit A nail on the head - it is the sanding which is a pain. We are worried that my husband may have been a little heavy-handed in the first round It has been funny you know that a few guys I have spoken to today are dead against tung oil, but love the poly....... now I know why - because there is less of a chance of return business maybe? ML No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6636 Hi, I am planning to select San Selmo reclaimed original for the fascade of my build. I have seen many photos on line of the brick varying from a rustic to a neat finish.… 0 4582 I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1938 |
