Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 08, 2011 4:51 pm Hi Folks, We are in the process of getting quotes for a floating floor in the living areas of our new home. One person who called me back today regarding our quote has informed me that floating floors reqire expansion joints every 6m. This means that every 6m there will be a big ugly strip of aluminium running across the length of the floor, the design of our living area means that we will need 3 of these. I have never seen this in anyone's timber floor that I have seen laid. I'm horrified at the thought of it as it is not what I imagined my floor would look like. The person then suggeted using solid timber flooring as the expansion joint wasn't required. I didn't think we could as we did not pay our builder extra to have the door frames etc raised (which is why we are going with an engineered floating floor). He seems to think that we can. So anyone who is in the know, are they having me on with the expansion joints? Are they just trying to get me to buy the solid flooring instead?? Any help appreciated. Re: Floating Floor + expansion joints, are they having me on 2Mar 08, 2011 5:29 pm Hi vpeewee, I'm not in the know, but this is my experience. I have a floating engineered floor running the length of my house from the front doors to the back stacker doors. It's 19.7m long and I do not have any expansion joins. I do have quad all the way around my skirtings and kitchen bench to hide the small gap required to allow for expansion. I do remember when the Guy installed it, he mentioned expansion joins at 12m, but he seemed to think mine would be OK, if I remember, due to the direction they were (I think, it was 18 months ago!). Anyway, I have a lifetime guarantee on the laying of my flooring so if anything happens they can come and fix it. It's been through cold, hot and damp humid conditions and hasn't lifted, buckled or moved. Best to get advice from other flooring people, this is just my experience... We had to have one since our biggest room spanned 8m - but we don't have aluminium strips - they filled the gap with cork. Once polished it doesn't show. Re: Floating Floor + expansion joints, are they having me on 4Mar 09, 2011 3:34 pm Stormy the problem is if you do have a problem the manufacturer does not warrant the timber as it has not been installed to there specs so if the layer does a runner you have no leg to stand on. 10 to 12 m is about right for a floating floor each material is different. Thanks, that's the motivation I needed to give it a try sooner rather than one day! 4 2978 Hi All, First time poster. I was hoping to get some advice on villaboard installation within a bathroom.
