Re: mix of polished concrete and wooden floors 5Mar 19, 2011 3:02 pm I've seen timber and polished concrete work really well together on a back patio, after seeing it me wanty.. same house has polished concrete bathroom floors... there is no skirting, just tiles floor to ceiling. Re: mix of polished concrete and wooden floors 6Apr 06, 2011 5:41 am It depends on how you are installing your floorboards, if you batten out the floor with 35mm timber and then secret nail 19mm hardwoood flooring, you'll get a 55mm rise off your concrete slab. You could then use this height to pour a decorative concrete mix over your existing slab. This is only one option.
However is a decorative concrete mix does not fit within your budget as they are north of $300 per cubic meter and you would like to polish the existing concrete then there is going t be a step. Your ging to have to use ply, I think its 12m or 15mm ply that you fix o te flor and then lay your hardwood flooring over the top.
Re: mix of polished concrete and wooden floors 7Apr 07, 2011 9:32 am If you are going to have timber and polished concrete then during the slab placement the timber areas would be set down to the polished concrete area, to suit the differing heights and provide a smooth transition. Re: mix of polished concrete and wooden floors 8Apr 14, 2011 9:02 pm Hey I have put out a few panicked posts today, sorry onc_artisan I even pmd you earlier... i was in shock lol. We were planning to go with a polished concrete finish in most of our extension. We prefered a lighter color than the standard slab so understood there would be an additional pour. Our builder today flagged a worst case of $500 per square meter. Our intended area is around 60 suare meters, thats north of 30k for the whole lot! Is he just trying to scare me (i would be sourceing the contractor anyway) or have i vastly underestimated the costs? All wisdom sought!!!!!!!!! I had a few quotes from NSW companies but all polishers sub contracted the form and placement. This was far too risky for my liking with too much room for error. We actually decided to go with tiles, until i found Onc. The stages of getting a slab ready to frame to can involve a number of contractors, or just one. Eccavation, formwork, reinforcing steel, and placing the concrete iside the forms is usually done by the one contractor. When you intend to have polished crete, some companies prefer to subcontract this part of the job, and focus on the grind and polish. it sounds good in principle, and i'm sure that it often is successful in practice. I didnt feel comfortable with this option as the final polished result is heavily dependant on the quality and consistency of the aggregate in the concrete, and i felt that having one person (or company) that was willing to do the job start to finish was preferrable. Thats where Onc came into the picture via H1. But as he has stated, Onc appears to be a victim of his own success, and is very busy. Re: mix of polished concrete and wooden floors 20Apr 18, 2011 7:36 am oops sorry ozberg meant to post this here not as a pm... Thanks, yes I had a vague idea that you meant a one stop shop. I am not owner building, however my builder has let me subcontract most of the work myself. The slab he is less inclined to let me organize, that I can understand as its pretty critical to the build. I will do a ring around today and post my results if i get anywhere there is only 20% difference in concrete strength between 20 mpa and 25 mpa, so check with your engineer first if it fits his calculation tolerances.
