Type of timber flooring: solid/ hardwood timber floor Re: Batten fix OR Direct mechanical fix method? 4Feb 11, 2011 12:54 pm If you are building from scratch and your home is elevated on piers a solid timber flooring is nailed to the foundation of the flooring, so direct nail to timber. If you are putting timber down over a slab, the usually way to do it is on batons to keep the timber off the slab in case of moister which will rot the timber after a while. It’s also best to have a thin timber underlay down over the slab as well. If laying tongue and groove laminate, the same method as above is used. Don’t forget to leave room for expansion of the timber when laying. And what if you need to remove a plank for some reason, you can’t, as it is glued down. No not recommended. I've never heard timber floors squeak…..creak maybe, but that's normal. What you need to watch out for, which is why I asked what timber, is the Laminates. They drum when you walk on them.
