Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 21, 2011 5:38 pm Its that stage of the home build where you have too many choices & do so much research that you totally get confused . From the h1 threads, i know I am not alone. but cud not get consolildated answers so far. So if anyone can throw some lite on this topic.. We dont want Tiles as they will be too cold under foot. Like the hard wood but wud prefer Bamboo due to eco friendliness.... But now there are so many products in Bamboo alone. I know compressed bamboo is better than Horizontal or vertical, so narrowed our choice to Compressed ones. But now is SOlid compressed better or Engineered compressed better. The company which suppiles & installs one do talk about the disad of the otherone. And the next question is to go for floating one (with good underlay) or to go with direct stick (with the glue). We are looking at reduced or no noise while walking on the floors. Also heard about this ARC bamboo, is this any better? Any experts on the forum??? Re: BamBooooooooooooo Questions !! 2Jan 22, 2011 2:12 pm Definitely go with solid compressed flooring. Solid compressed bamboo boards are one solid and hard layer processed out of compressed flooring. Whereas engineered are three layers, the top and bottom are a layer of compressed bamboo while the middle is a horizontal layer. Solid compressed flooring are prone to warping, and this is why engineered bamboo was created. HOWEVER, if the factory is highly reputable and the floor boards created are of the highest quality then there should be no problem with warping in solid compressed boards. My english is not the best so apologies in advance. Engineered compressed bamboo is highly prone to be damaged by water. If you spill say a cup of coffee on solid compressed boards, (depending on the quality of the flooring) it should not affect it because the liquid goes to the bottom of the flooring, which is totally sealed and so dries up and flooring is left unaffected. However with engineered boards, the liquid is more likely to be trapped in the middle horizontal layer because this layer is not sealed. Once its in the middle layer then it becomes trapped inside the actual floorboards and hence, the floor is ruined. We had a lot of jobs last year after the big Perth storm where many bamboo floors were ruined, of these I can tell you that 90% were engineered compressed flooring. We directly stick to concrete, because again it helps prevent damage by water and also we have found that after a while with underlay flooring, the floorboards begin to rise floor because there is nothing holding them down. I hope this was helpful and best of luck! Re: BamBooooooooooooo Questions !! 3Jan 23, 2011 10:23 am Hi OH, We have had the engineered bamboozle flooring for the past six months and it has been perfect. We've had a few minor spills which we wiped up quickly, no problems with warping or the like. Wear has been pretty good, the only scratches were caused by tradesmen in the early stages after handover. Sorry I have to disagree with this comment, both the solid and engineered compressed boards will react the same if there is a lot of water on them, in the storms last year I have lifted not only engineered but solid compressed boards as well. And to say 90% was just the the engineered compressed board is not true!! Almost saying that the solid board will withstand a major flood also not true !! This is a great article about solid and engineered compressed bamboo http://www.simplybamboo.com.au/compress ... oring.html Re: BamBooooooooooooo Questions !! 5Mar 01, 2011 6:49 pm There is a lot of misinformation out there with regard to bamboo flooring. Firstly compressed or strand woven Bamboo is the hardest and most durable style of flooring (at least 70% harder than Jarrah). Bamboo is highly termite resistant and ecologically friendly (due to the fact that bamboo is a grass, grows quickly and once harvested grows back from the same plant, thus minimising soil erosion and nutrient loss). All compressed bamboos are good the only differences from there are colour and width choices, hence differing styles IE: engineered, solid, click and lock. As mentioned in an earlier blog, some companies sell only one style so of course that is the style they push. One thing I would say is a moisture barrier should be installed on the sub floor, even in a reno as many factors can affect the moisture in a sub floor over time. Direct stick is the most solid and the quietest under foot once installed. But the best choice is an engineered board that suits your budget, so floating may be the way to go.
