Must say Ash when I saw the link I went hmm .... I used to live in Sweden - and with a link like ProsOnline Myths Sweden Carpet was not the first thing I thought of But a good link it was I'd actually like to see a bit more comparative data like - cases of hospitalisation due to people falling onto hard floors veruses if they'd had carpet would it have helped reducethe severity of their injuries. YES! Back around 1995, I attended an indoor air quality conference, and Dr Peter Dingle (environmental toxicologist) was speaking at length. This and other trials were referred to. From memory, one of the main places in Sweden that were changing from carpets to hard floors were hospitals and aged homes etc. There was a significant negative impact on injuries from falls etc. Statistics were presented also (on a global scale) for spine & back ailments. They were staggering! Considering the level of back probs that folk have, there's a strong case FOR having more forgiving textile floor-coverings as opposed to hard floors. Personally, I recall when we first built our house, and had concrete floors in areas that we now have timber in. If I spent a few hours cooking or anything where I had to stand continuously, I'd develop a dull ache in my legs. This is one reason that I tend to NOT like tiles in living areas of homes, and why I often suggest folk consider cork as a good alternative where hard floors are appropriate. The bottom line is this....... FAR TOO MANY FOLK DISMISS CARPETS, (AND THEIR MANY BENEFITS) BASED UPON INACCURATE PERCEPTIONS OF THEIR ROLE IN THE HOME. and... MOST OF THE (PERCEIVED) NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES OF CARPETS ARE EASILY OVERCOME BY GOOD HOUSE-KEEPING WITH EFFECTIVE VACUUM CLEANERS AND MAINTENANCE PRINCIPLES. Ash. Oiii Ash - Off your horse Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I totally agree Ash. All of my manufactruring clients have soft rubber matts to ease the workers legs - instead of standing on concrete - and I agree things don't break as easily on softer floor coverings - ie tiles in a kitchen = broken anything you drop. and I can see and appreciate the carpet collect dust attributes. And how it causes carpets burns when you fall which is much better than broken bones Now back to these lasses in Sweden your were talking about Steve |
