Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 24, 2010 4:24 pm Hi there, I've installed a new granite hearth for an open fireplace. The carpet is the next thing to be replaced... As the hearth is raised up off the floor, there is a 40mm high x 20mm wide gap under the hearth and the carpet needs to be laid into this gap, under the hearth, to give a floating effect. I will be using professional layers with new smoothedge but the smoothedge can only be installed outside the gap as there is no way to hammer it down. This will create a "gully" of at least 20mm between the smoothedge and the back of the gap. From "Royalblue's" posts it would appear that this is too much. How do I solve this problem? Thanks, OzzyJack Re: Laying carpet with a wide gully under a "floating" heart 2Dec 24, 2010 8:27 pm The only thing that comes to mind is to get them to put the smoothedge as close to the hearth as possible and glue down the loose end underneath and the smoothedge around the hearth should keep it in place. I doubt if they could get anything under there apart from a nozzle to apply some glue and since it's only 20mm it's unlikely to move much but geez what a pita for the layer Re: Laying carpet with a wide gully under a "floating" heart 3Dec 28, 2010 7:18 am Following on from Piscean's post, set the smooth edge as close as possible, then glue a layer of underlay to the floor and then the carpet to the underlay. This will ensure that the carpet doesn't lift and affect the uniform floating gap you already have. but yes, a major PITA for the layer, and I'd want to ensure that the layer/shop knows about it first. Because if he/she is not aware of it, and therefore not being compensated for the extra stuff around, then they'll possibly not take the time or care to get it right for you. So it'll cost more, but it'll cost less to have it done right the first time by discussing and negotiating BEFORE the installation.
