Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 21Dec 21, 2010 3:16 pm Hi There are two types of grout sealers the first one is a clear penertrating sealer these only give you enough time to treat a stain, it water proofs the grout but thats about it as these sealers loose there tension over time, You apply the clear sealer by hand on knee pads but you must buff off excess from tile asap you can not let the sealer dry on the tile. The second sealer is a topical sealer which comes in 16 colours called grout colour sealing these sealers are the premium off all sealers they repel everything stains, red soil, oil just about anything and lasts the life of the tile. They are applied the same as clear sealers but at a different procedure application, there will be DIY kits available early next year with a how to DVD or you can have an applicator do it for you. Craig Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 22Dec 21, 2010 3:19 pm Grout Perfect qonyx Bagheera I'm currently looking at glazed porcelain tiles for our living areas but noticed on the invoice for our sample that the shop is recommending to seal them... I assumed that the glazing will be enough - obviously not... Bagheera - i'd like an answer on that as well as we were also told the same thing - when I would think that the glaze would be able to 'protect' the tile.. does anyone have any feedback on this? Glazed tiles do not need sealing never has and never will the only thing we seal these days is grout due to how porous it can be or natural porous stone. Craig Thanks Grout Perfect - I thought that it was funny having to seal a glazed tile - but that what is stated on their Invoice template. Re sealing the grout our builder's tiler said not to bother as we intend to have rectified edges with minimum grout lines. He only advised not to use soapy water though - mentioned something about vinegar and some kind of acid to clean once in a while - is this the case? Once a tile is sealed by an owner or a prof applicator than this means you are changing the characteristics of your tile, this will instantly void your warranty of who ever you purchased the tiles from or maybe thats why they say seal it seal everything . In saying that warranties on tiles does not exsist anyway, I have never really seen a customer win yet in 15 years there is good info on the Tile Council Australia regarding this. Regarding cleaning grout, vinegar or any acid will damage your grout over time, it eats the cement in the grout just leaving sand if not rinsed out asap. Always use a neutral cleaner to clean your grout you can scrub with a grout brush but you must dry the grout before the dirty water dries out. If you notice the grout getting worse than a high alkaline solution is needed but you must rinse these out also as not to attract more dirt faster, no need to rinse neutral cleaners out just towel dry. Craig Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 24Dec 21, 2010 4:32 pm what type of neutral solution would you recommend? The dilution rates are 25ml to 5 litres cold water should last over a year easily. No the showrooms will not show a sealing demo as they do not want to get involved in sealing and yes some sealers can alter the tiles appearence but mainly the grout. Craig Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 30Dec 22, 2010 9:33 am The only glazed tiles that "may" need sealing are those that have a lapato finished. This is a light honed polish to the surface. I always check this out with my supplier in Spain or the local wholesalers I purchase from. Cheers Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 31Dec 22, 2010 8:52 pm Can anyone add more info about those porcelain tiles which are marked as "DC"? They are different to full bodied porcelain - they have 2 parts stuck together, with the "normal" porcelain being on top, so you can see the colour difference on the sides. Are these any much worse than the full bodied porcelain? They seem to be more expensive (probably just because of the labour&technology involved, somehting like with engineered timber flooring). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 32Dec 22, 2010 10:00 pm DC stands for Double Charged. Yes, two layers (two different clays). I would say these are not as good as full bodies, particularly if you are doing something like a balcony and have exposed edges. It all depends on the age of the grout and the maintenance procedure it has been through. You can buy a heavy duty tile and grout cleaner from a tile shop which must be alkaline based NOT acid based. You will need a stiff grout brush by at a cleaning supply shop on a pole. Mix your solution as required and mop on keep wet do not let dry out, let sit for 5-10 minutes than agitate with grout brush once complete you will need to rinse the floor thoroughly repeat the rinse than towel dry and wait a few days to see the result. Craig Re: Show us your matt porcelain tiling 36Jan 18, 2011 9:10 pm Grout Perfect CAUTION Keep this in mind! In saying that warranties on tiles does not exsist anyway, I have never really seen a customer win yet in 15 years there is good info on the Tile Council Australia regarding this. Craig Hi Craig, What happens if the tiles crack and it is clear that it is not the fault of the owner. ie. Hairline fracture or just a pure crack down the middle - are you saying that generally this is difficult for the owner to make a warranty claim.
