Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 01, 2007 7:26 pm We are building a double-storey house and our floors will have:
- ground floor, all areas except home theatre - PORCELAIN TILES - 1st floor, supposed to be carpet to all areas except wet areas But now we are thinking of using timber flooring (laminate) to all areas upstairs, except wet areas and bed rooms. Do you think it's a good idea? Have anyone done it? Have you seen a house with timber flooring upstairs instead of the usual carpet? Would greatly appreciate your suggestions/comments on this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 2Dec 01, 2007 8:53 pm What are you thinking of having on the staircase?
Consider the height of the proposed floor, compared with the height of the other floorcoverings. I personally don't like the trims that they usually use to cover these mating surfaces. Homes with a lot of different types of floorcoverings can be a bit hotch-potch, if there are not good reasons for the difference. That is why we're thinking that it might be a good idea to have timber flooring upstairs (except for the bed rooms). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 4Dec 02, 2007 2:57 pm You said you were considering timber (laminate) upstairs, right? Are you talking about a floating floor installation? But on the stairs, timber would need to be glued. So would the surfaces be/look the same? So would the surfaces be/look the same? Yes, I'm talking about floating floors for the upstairs. And yes, the timber stair treads would be glued. The builder will leave it raw finish and we're going to put the stain after hand over. We're thinking of matching the colours of the laminate flooring and the stain for the stairs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 6Dec 02, 2007 8:05 pm It will be difficult to match them, they will always be 'different'. I think you would be better off to complement different tones. I think you would be better off to complement different tones. That's what I thought. Also, how will the floating floor be finished where the stairs meet? I don't like those aluminium trims! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 8Dec 03, 2007 8:10 pm Thanks for the comments/suggestions, Dukekamaya and Royalblue.
We now realised that it won't look good to have all those aluminum trims to separate different flooring types. Also, if it would be hard to match the tones, then we don't like it. It's really good that we're part of this forum! Thanks heaps! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 10Dec 03, 2007 9:22 pm VJ We now realised that it won't look good to have all those aluminum trims to separate different flooring types. You don't really notice them that much and there isn't much of an easy way aroound using them. I used brass ones, they match the door handles and hinges etc. Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 11Dec 03, 2007 9:31 pm I see a distinct advantage in using the aluminium trims.
If you want to resurface your timber floor or replace your carpet you don't have to vacate the whole house of all the furntirue. Instead just do the required section up to the aluminium trim. You could also put in additional aluminium trims say betwen the living area floorboards and bedroom floorboards. Then when it comes to 10 years and time to do the living area floorboards, the aluminium strip provides a clean line of where to stop. The bedrooms and other low taffic areas can then be done every 20 years. What do you think? We will be in the same boat soo too. Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 14Dec 03, 2007 10:16 pm Cripes, I'm having a day burying myself in the s#!t!.....
Guess a lot of folks have these floors and the trims are standard. I'm not sure what alternatives there are with those floors. Please consider my ramblings as a lot of polly-waffle, and disregard. Must be Ash's day of insults! Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 15Dec 03, 2007 10:45 pm Ash no dont take it the wrong way, there are timber trims as well, i just wanted some feedback as to what might be better? Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 17Dec 04, 2007 7:15 am A standard timber cover strip is actually slightly higher (8mm) and they are only for use where the two surfaces are of the exact same height.
The aluminium cover strips are deigned for joining surfaces of slightly different heights i.e. carpet to timber to tiles etc etc. I personally think its one of those items that people tend to 'over-think' - when they're down on the floor you really don't pay that much attention to them. Re: Timber flooring to 1st floor.. what are your thoughts? 18Dec 04, 2007 8:19 am I have seen, I think at Bunnings from memeory, plastic stips with the colouring of woodgrain for that very thing. Although you are still left with the dilema of when the wood/wood laminate buts up against the carpet to the room, it will stand out as much as aluminium or brass because of the colour change from flooring to flooring... There is no easy way out, except to make all the floors upstairs wood/wood laminate except for the wet areas.
