Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 25, 2010 5:15 pm Hi all, My place has tiles throughout the entry, kitchen, dining, living areas which is quite a big area. I've been here five years but the tiles have been in for about 20 years and some of the grout has broken down and gone powdery. I can see that previous owners have patched where they could but I'm ready to rip it out and redo it, or maybe even grout right over the top of it. I cannot physically use the little grout knife/saw thing for the space I need. I've tried a dremel but chipped the edge of tiles. Any advice would be great!! Q1: anyone know of a power tool I can use for grout removal (preferably with dust bag) Q2: have you ever just re-grouted right over the top of old grout so that it gives a 'new' finish? Thanks folks... Re: Re-grouting large tiled area 2Nov 26, 2010 12:10 pm Hi you can not apply grout over grout it will end up falling out. You can buy or hire a fien multimaster tool these work great but you still have to be careful and do not use your own vaccum to suck up the dust you have to use a shop vac/wet and dry vac. I would not try and do this yourself you should call a professional but if money is tight than go to bunning buy a shop vac and a bosh tool works like the fien tool but a lot cheaper. Craig ps once all grout is removed make sure all joints are clean and there is no grout still stuck to the edge of the tile and when installing new grout make sure it is reccessed 2-3 ml at least. Craig Re: Re-grouting large tiled area 3Nov 28, 2010 7:56 pm Thanks for that Craig. I actually did the kitchen floor area but scraped all the grout out by using the tiny grout saw. I've looked for places that will do large areas but they seem to mainly do bathroom/shower work, and not the large house area. I'll check out the shop vac (any excuse for a trip to bunnings).
