Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 16, 2010 3:53 pm I've been doing the rounds calling various places to get quotes on bamboo flooring. We really love the Bamwood product that Bamboozle sell, however not so keen on the price when supplied and installed. Is this sort of engineered direct stick flooring hard to install, or is DIY an option? Any advice or experiences you can share would be fantastic! Alternatively if you can recommend a particular supplier/installer then please send me a PM New beginnings. Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 2Nov 17, 2010 2:23 pm You can DIY bamboozle bamwood (from memory its about $100 pre-finished or $90 unfinished per sqm). The DIY aspect of direct stick itself is not *hard* perse, its the prep work to get the substrate perfectly flat which can involve grinding concrete and/or self levelling compounds. My friends did theirs and IMO it was a pretty ordinary job and they reckon they would never do it again. I guess it comes down to your DIY "handyness" and whether you are prepared to spend the time (and money) to do it properly? Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 4Jan 23, 2011 6:41 pm Are the floorboards tongue and groove or click boards? If so then DIY is definitely an option. Alternatively you could go to Bamboo Connection. They don't sell 'Bamwood' but solid compressed bamboo flooring, not engineered. Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 5Feb 01, 2011 7:07 pm I stepped into Bamboozle in Osborne Park the other day. Was quoted $70 per meter, provided I order over 100 meters. Supply only, pre finished, pre polished. Seemed like a great product in store. I then took a sample into the office, one of my workmates hit it (hard, mind you) with the edge of the ruler. The ruler broke, but the bamboo sample did dent fairly substaintually. I wonder how they would hold up under high-heels.... This is the only reservation I have with this product, and it is spread across the entire "wood" option...... viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46664 Building in Baldivis, Western Australia. First home, with Impressions. Would love it if you were to stop by some time! Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 6Feb 18, 2011 1:15 am Got our flooring done last week. Auction bought - $22/m. Cheapest installer in Perth - $35/m including prep work (mind you - new house), sealer and glue. Skirtings extra. Seems like a going rate to install in Perth - $40/m and above. Had 150 to be done, hence a search for a best deal Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 7Feb 21, 2011 2:19 am Sergey Got our flooring done last week. Auction bought - $22/m. So ask yourself is it worth it getting the bamboo so cheap to the high risk of health problem later. Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? This is the only reservation I have with this product, and it is spread across the entire "wood" option...... We took two samples home, set our kids upon them and had them torture them with everything they could imagine. We even purposely gouged them with keys etc. Yes, there were some obvious indentations and marks (what timber floor wouldn't have any either) but it wasn't so bad unless you looked close up...I recall the lighter bamboozle floor (honey) looked better in the end. FWIW, we had prefinished oak floors back in Canada in our home for about 8 years and yes, you could see marks when you got down really close to the floor, but generally, no one does that...and it looked okay even after having a couple of kids dropping stuff on it regularly. As for the high heels, if it's going to be a home setting, then why not just take them off? (Sorry, Canadian...we remove shoes at the door anyway). We just had our bamboozle floors installed two weeks ago. Yes, the price worked out to about $130 sq m installed...but then 1) they did a great job levelling and prepping the floor and 2) their attention to detail (corners etc.) really shows...I mean I'm sure we could have muddled through the basic install, but they finished it nicely with the splay beading etc. We wouldn't have been skilled enough to make it look as nice. Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 9Mar 20, 2011 1:47 am We got our bamboo done about 6 months ago, compressed natural, it was not solid, better structure apparently. Anyway, all good so far, seems to be as durable as they said. We paid $99 per meter fully installed and it included everything except removing our carpets. we used http://www.allwoodflooring.com.au One of our friends got it done by them recently and are happy as well! So is well tested, and the companies offering this product give a 5 installation warranty and also the companies have been around over 7 years, with showrooms giving them a face in the industry. How many years between re-sanding & how many re-sands can you do before it is too thin? I just want to be a full bottle on this. TIA Onc Hello onc_artisan Have noted !!! You are right in saying that there are some bamboo product which have high levels of VOC`s, and these are cheaper bamboo flooring from china, at the end of the day, if you say to the factory I want as cheap as possible then what do you think they will do, they will use younger bamboo, and use finishes and glues that are a lot cheaper than the E1 standard finish and glues. My bamboo meets E1 standard and is tested by my staff in china, who work independently and not for the factory, they give me a report about each container and will test on a regular basis, by visiting the factory during the process of manufacture and at the loading of the container. The finish which is used is a German product called klummp and will last for at least 10 year of normal wear and tear before it will need sanding. Our bamboo flooring can be sanded at least 4 times in its life. Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 15Mar 23, 2011 10:28 pm So you are saying it will last 40+ years? Why is the warrantee you offer 5 years? BTW with the demand on Bamboo and 600,000 workers farming it you can understand why some can be skeptical of the sustainablity claims and issues of land clearing to be replanted with Bamboo. I too care about the sustainability of the extractive industries associated with concrete... and is why we are using glass for example as an aggregate. But that is my barrow to push. I too care about the sustainability of the extractive industries associated with concrete... and is why we are using glass for example as an aggregate. But that is my barrow to push. Hello Artisan Seems like you are an expert in the bamboo flooring industry as well as the concrete industry! First of all we give a warranty of 10 years on the board itself and a 5 year on the installation, and these are my business warranty not the factory warranty. Regarding the board lasting 40+ years is more than correct and longer if look after, but given a warranty for this length of time is unrealistic. Would I be still around being 80 years old still running the business lol and laying the floors, I think not, giving a warranty for 10 years and 5 years is a lot more realistic given that we have been selling and laying bamboo for over 7 years. You think that bamboo is not more Eco-friendly and better for the environment than cutting down rain-forest for example. Have you ever been to china? There are millions and millions of acres of bamboo growing freely. So I guess we can say that bamboo is better than cutting down hardwood trees. What warranty do u give on you concrete? Re: Bamboo flooring - DIY? (Perth) 17Mar 24, 2011 9:29 am Hmmm definately no expert on Bamboo, thats why I asked the questions. Have I travelled yes... more than once our diamonds come from there after they have been dug up here. The warrantee that we offer is as solid as concrete. I don't think I made any comment to get you offside but thought a valid question or 2 might be good for business, awareness is all important specially since the invisible friend Google so readily gives answers. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4782 Re my second point – yes exactly. And often it may take additional time if the manufacturer recommends no more than X meters… 3 5643 |
