Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 31, 2010 9:45 am Is it normal that Timbermate changes colour after it's been applied to flooring??!?! I bought a sample pot and tried it on our timber. The sample colour pretty much matches the average timber colour - but only while it's in the original jar. Once applied, it's still fairly ok until it dries - and then it stands out big time!!! It basically changed from the original colour ("hardwood" is the colour name) to super light and kinda sick-looking pinkish, very artificial and ugly ... Is this how it stays even after applying the sealer and top coats, or does it return to the original colour as per the sample jars???? Help me please!!! Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 10Nov 07, 2010 7:29 am Hi namtrak, does the type of timber matter for Timbermate? (and I suppose you meant the species when you asked for type?) Can you help? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 11Nov 08, 2010 6:42 pm The hardwood timbermate is designed for the lighter timbers - vic ash, tassie oak etc. For tallowwood I would maybe try the Jarrah timbermate - I think thats what I used for the last Tallowwood floor (still waiting on pics from the client). You can mix and match these a bit - try watering down the Jarrah with maybe some Pine? Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 12Nov 08, 2010 9:13 pm Ummmhh, it looked to me that Hardwood is one of the darkest colours which is not red . Still, how can it lighten that much when it's dry! And does it stay that light when you put sealer coat over it, or does it return back to its normal "raw" colour? Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 13Nov 09, 2010 5:54 am The timbermate does change colour, where-ever you buy the timbermate from there should be a little colour card showing the different colours. I use that guide all the time to match the putty with the floor Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 14Nov 09, 2010 5:59 am Sample pot from Bunnings, transparent little jar so you can see the colour well. Matches really well to the wood when you put the wood next to the jar and when you put the putty into holes in timber while the putty is still fresh (hasn't started to dry). BUT, after half an hour, the putty is rock hard and super super light (changed colour) and obviosuly stands (ie. screams!) out of the wood. But, if you put a drop of water onto the putty only, it becomes the original colour again (so it matches again). Is this goign to happen when they put the sealer coat on - sealer wets the putty and timber and seals it so the putty cannot dry out / change colour again - well that's what I'm hoping for ... ?? Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 16Aug 04, 2011 5:22 pm From our experience, yes, TM returns to its 'wet' colour after you put the sealer on it. However, not sure if it works the same with every sealer. BUT a warning: some finishes will "bleach" TM, I think some water based ones. This is actually written as a big warning on large packs of TM (a few kilos) that non-pros hardly ever see (if you stick to Bnngs, chances are they don't have these "commercial" size packs and nobody actually tells you about this issue). BTW, what species are you getting? I found that there is virtually zero match in the standard colour range (direct out of the jar), but you can mix and match any standard colour (and any number of them) and the resulting product will highly likely match waaay better. There is an infinite range of colours that you can get by mixing. For darker timbers, always add a bit of black too, works a treat. Also (obviously), always try it out on some offcuts - but it would be best if you could also try the sealer and coating on top of the TM (to test for colour-safety or any bleaching). It's not a quick process (to test this properly). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Timbermate changing colour after application 17Aug 04, 2011 5:59 pm Hi lex I am having blackbutt. Also I've been told to go a few shades darker so once timber darkens over time it will blend in nicer. I will be going with a solvent based coating. How much are you ahead in payments compared to where the build is at? Have you fully drawn down the loan? 5 11915 Thanks for the response! However, it's have been sorted.
