Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 28, 2010 7:30 pm We have had the keys for nearly 2 months now, and to say I'm over the post handover **** is an understatement!!! Anyway, our floorboards are laid, and today they started sanding them, but have cut the carpet back so far that there is now gaps between the carpet and the boards and the carpet has already been stretched, so there is no way we can have it butting up against the boards. They asked us when laying how we wanted it finished and we said butting up against the carpet... NO plastic moulding, so they finished it so we could do that, but now the sanders have cut it back so far and there was heaps of overhang. Heres some pics of what I'm talking about. How the hell are they going to be able to finish this now?? We will have to have some sort of moulding, which is not what we wanted!! So so over this build, I was so excited when we had handover, but now I'm just one big stress pit!! It will defeat the purpose if we still have to have some kind of moulding there! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 3Oct 28, 2010 9:20 pm 1st. You needed a carpet layer to fit a row of smooth edge along the joining area and cut the carpet and stretch it. It is not stretched as there's nothing for it to stretch onto. So 1st thing is get a carpet layer out with some smooth edge and a power stretcher - he may be able to save the day. In saying that it looks pretty severe (the gap). If you can't get enough stretch, I would be hitting the floor sanders up for new carpet. They should have known better. If my timber layer did that to one of my customers, I would make him pay for new carpet if it couldn't be fixed. Careless. You "might" get out of jail with a power stretch though. Try a pro carpet layer first. Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 4Oct 28, 2010 10:41 pm Thanks Anthony. This what I'm upset about, is I asked all these questions before we went ahead with the job, and I was told it was all good... argghhh. I thought the carpet had already been stretched as it is tacked onto the little wood strip already with the nails on it (sorry, I have no idea what it's called). Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 5Oct 29, 2010 8:24 am I couldn't see any sign of the smooth edge (the wood with the nails) - is it still there ? If so, a layer with a power stretcher may be able to save the day - depends on whats left in the carpet and what direction its installed. Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 6Oct 29, 2010 10:06 am Yeah, the smooth edge is still there, it's right where they've cut the carpet to. I have e-mailed the office the photos and asked what they will do. I will get a layer out to see if he can stretch the carpet anymore, but it's got a fair way to still stretch, so we'll see. Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 7Oct 29, 2010 10:39 am How wide is the room at the area that needs to be stretched up? That is the deciding factor. A power stretcher should make it up to the timber, especially if the carpet was just knee-kicked in the first place. The existing carpet gripper along the timber will need to be replaced, and fixed closer to the timber to get a proper Timber/carpet finish. Mark Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 8Oct 29, 2010 11:19 am Thanks Mark, hopefully it can be done. They are all doorways. One is only as wide as the doorway, two are doorways that are flush with the walls, so around 3.5m, and the other is a double doorway which is flush with the walls too. They have been cut pretty unevenly, so would this affect it, ie, need to be cut straight or will it be o.k as it is. The carpet actually has squares on it, so will stretching even further make the squares uneven? This is a pic of the whole carpet Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Please tell me this can be fixed!! 9Oct 29, 2010 1:43 pm The pattern will need to be kept straight. Didn't see that in the first pixs. That can involve relaying the whole area, to avoid a bow in the pattern by just stretching one section only. See the original carpetlayer and get his advise. It is hard to know the exact max. gap by the photo, but I feel that a stretcher will make it. PS send bill to timber layers Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense.
