Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 22, 2010 8:17 pm We have recently built a new home and have laid 600x600 Jade Nano Polished Porcelain Tiles in all the wet areas. Unfortunately when the carpet layer was laying the carpet, they left some major scratch lines on the kitchen floor tiles. There are a large number of tiles that have been scratched and it is a HUGE job to rip them all up and replace, complicated by the fact that we can no longer get tiles of the same batch and so there is colour variation. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of how to remove the grey lines that are left by metal objects scratching polished porcelain tiles? If we can remove the grey colour, the scratch lines will not be obvious and we may not have to replace all the tiles... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 2Oct 25, 2010 3:23 pm Hi Two things you can try. 1. Buy some magic cook top glass cleaner apply agitate and than rinse. 2. Buy some phosforic acid dilute 50/50 pour onto area allow to sit for 5 minutes do not let dry out than agitate by hand with white scour pad once complete rinse floor I would go with step one first. Hope this helps. craig Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 3Oct 25, 2010 5:18 pm Thanks Craig. I have tried a number of other things already without any success, but these are new ideas, so I'll give them a go. Where's the best place to buy the Magic Cook Top Cleaner? Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 4Oct 25, 2010 5:27 pm They sell magic cook top glass cleaner at Woolworths it is also great for cleaning shower glass doors that have been etched by hard water. Craig Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 6Oct 28, 2010 9:43 pm Hi Craig, Just wanted to let you know that I finally got to purchase some Magic Cooktop tonight, and while I have only just begun the process, it looks like it is definitely improving the situation . Might take a few goes to get the lines completely removed, but they are definitely lighter than before I started. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my post. Your assistance is MUCH appreciated On another note, I was reading another of your posts that recommends using a "neutral cleaner no higher than PH 7 to clean your tiles and grout". Do you recommend a particular brand / product for cleaning polished porcelain tiles? Once again, many thanks. Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 7Oct 29, 2010 7:38 am Thats great news I am really glad it has improved you may have to give the cleaner more dwell time and agitation. The maintenance cleaner we recommend is called Supa Star from Research Products you can buy this at any cleaning supply store remember a little goes a long way 25 mls to 5 litres of water is all you need. Craig Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 8Oct 29, 2010 8:06 am Thanks for the details on SupaStar - I'll look into that... Unfortunately, on inspecting the tiles I cleaned last night, it appears that the Magic Cooktop has actually removed the protective coating from the polished porcelain and has left a hazy mark along the line that I scrubbed last night ... So while the grey line is lighter, we now have a hazy line that stands out much more from a distance. Don't know if there is anyway to fix this or apply a coating again??? I almost think the grey line would be better than a hazy line!! No more scrubbing tiles! Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 9Oct 29, 2010 8:27 am All you need to do is rinse that area use some window cleaner or vinega 50/50 mix and towel dry asap no not let dry out on its own. There is no protective coating on polished porcelains, although there is a wax coating sometimes on new installs which can be removed by using spirit porcelain creme cleanser you can buy at a tile shop it is very hard to remove the polish of porcelain tiles. Craig Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 10Oct 29, 2010 8:59 am The tiles we have are nanotechnology - I don't know much about the specifics, but I thought they had a coating. Rubbing the tiles continuously in the same spot has obviously damaged the coating because there is a clear haze line. I have tried rinsing with vinegar, and also cleaning with a window cleaner, but no success. The damage is obvious because when you put water on top of the tile it all runs to the line and pools on top of the damaged area, whereas water does not settle on the rest of the tile. Don't know if there is any way to reapply the nano coating? If not, we may still have to rip these tiles up and replace at some point, and until then, the hazy line and grey lines will drive me crazy!! BTW: We have already removed the wax coating that was there when they were first purchased / installed. Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 11Oct 29, 2010 10:02 am Sorry to hear that, we use cook top glass cleaner everyday on polished porcelains with no problems, I did not know yours had the nano coating applied this can come of with abrasive cleaners but loosing the shine is impossible but not on cheap china imports. Nano sealers are really not nano technology most of there nano so called sealers are just a marketing name, we believe they just spray on a topical sealer coating than they apply wax to hide the imperfections. We only see this coming out of China cheap imports to get customers to buy there tiles. My opinion is it came from China and the quality of the clay and polishing creates many dramas to our customers no matter what they use, they loose there shine even after walking on them after a few years or a haze apperas after wax removal. Can you remember how much you paid for them I am sure you would be able to find the same tile at another tile shop. You can also try and find out what the manufacture recommends ask the tile shop if they know the contact info as I have heard there is something that can be done. You can call me if you like on 0403 33 26 46 for more info. Craig Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 12Oct 29, 2010 10:23 am I used Gumption to get the same type of scratch marks off my tiles once, but they weren't polished porcelain What about a Caesarstone or Granite cream cleanser, whatever you try next, try it on an area that won't be seen. Too late to say it now...sorry very upsetting to have happen. Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 13Oct 29, 2010 8:39 pm Can you re-seal them (if they are re-sealable)? And can you ask the shop where you got them what to do or who to contact? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 14Oct 29, 2010 10:08 pm Thanks for your reply Craig. If you are right, and they are out of China, it sounds like we may have a few more surprises to come in the future As you and others have suggested, I will contact the tile shop and see what they recommend regarding re-sealing - hopefully there may be something that can be done. We did ask them initially about the metal scratch marks and they were not very helpful, simply telling us the tiles would have to be replaced. It has been an ongoing saga between the carpet layer and tile/carpet company, which is still not resolved... Quote: whatever you try next, try it on an area that won't be seen suh: I did initially try the magic cooktop on a separate piece of tile and it didn't appear to affect the polish so I went ahead and tried it on the real thing. However, I think I rubbed a lot more and a lot harder on the one on the floor, and hence the damage... I will know better for next time... Lex: that is what I am trying to work out - whether there is a way to reseal... I will contact the shop and see what they have to say... Grout Perfect: Craig, thanks for providing your number, I may give you a call if I don't get any help from the tile shop! Once again, many thanks to all for trying to assist Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 15Oct 29, 2010 11:32 pm Since the scratches were caused by the carpet layer.... HE should be fixing the problem or replacing the tiles (he should be insured to cover costs) An awful predicament but if it comes down to it, he is liable. Re: Polished Porcelain Tiles- How to remove metal scratch ma 16Oct 30, 2010 6:13 am I have another idea...the White Magic sponges. You wet them and rub onto marks and they magically disappear. That shouldn't hurt the tiles, and it's worth a try Generally, the texture that you listed will have a 2mm size stone chip in it which is dragged with float to give the lines Any patch work needs to be 2mm less than face… 2 1826 Fine with me... just let 'em step in with some affordable (but good) gear... 12 5497 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5947 |
