Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 19, 2010 7:36 am I am confused...is what is the difference between 12mm and 8mm laminate floor? most of the flooring guys I talked to says 8mm is fine... Re: laminate floor - 12mm or 8mm??? 2Oct 19, 2010 8:14 am It depends on what you want. 8mm is the "standard" thats been around for years and years. Nothing wrong with it. The 12mm traditionally has been a premium, high gloss product. So basically, the 12mm high gloss has been made aimed at the "timber" buyer market, and the 8mm still is a great product, aimed at the laminate market. The great thing about having the two products is that consumers get a choice, ranging from high teens for a 7/8 mm all the way up to low hundreds for an Australian species timber - and every price point in between !! You'll notice that the 12mm has nicer decor's - thats a big difference. They do tend to look better, but thats a matter of opinion too (everyone has their own opinion on what looks good afterall). Either way, I am sure you'd be happy with either - its just a matter of which you prefer the look of. Just DON'T buy a cheap and nasty 12mm. There are many cheap imitation products flooding the amrket now the dollar has got up to close to parity. Buy it from a "branded" retailer. Re: laminate floor - 12mm or 8mm??? 3Oct 19, 2010 9:10 am Like Anthony says it really is up to you, personal preference. One thing to consider is the 12mm does sound better underfoot than the 8mm - not so 'clicky" and some of the patterns look so realistic in the 12mm gloss. We are in Sydney and been to some flooring companies...e.g. decorug etc...the 12mm selection is quite limited...do you guys have any good recommendations in sydney? e.g. brand/store? thanks again. Re: laminate floor - 12mm or 8mm??? 5Oct 19, 2010 12:46 pm We're going with 12mm as told the sound is better. Also having a sound proof underlay to make it better. We chose it cause i saw a colour and loved it and there was only $500 difference between having 8mm or 12mm Re: laminate floor - 12mm or 8mm??? 6Oct 26, 2010 8:16 pm what about chinese laminate 12.3mm vs 9.5mm belgium laminate? I am thinking to install 12.3mm laminate from solomon's flooring and it's made in china. It said the brand is Ultra clic but when I research it on google, it looks like it's a different company and they don't have the colour that I like at solomons (spotted gum). Anyone has bad experience with chinese laminate from good retailer? Or if anyone has used the Ultra clic laminate before, can you please share your opinion? Thanks!! Re: laminate floor - 12mm or 8mm??? 7Oct 27, 2010 3:08 pm Many Chinese products are actually very good now. The thing is that the bigger mills in china are joint ventures with European companies and are run by Eurpoeans, using European machines. The only Chinese aspect is the nationality of the forklift driver who loads it on a container - it's all automated and so don't be put off by that. Solomons is part of the Carpet Call group, and whilst they are my sworn opposition, I am confident thy would only sell decent products. Likewise, just because a product is made in Germany, Belgium, France or anywhere in Europe, doesn't automatically make it good quality of course. Same goes for Australian made.
