Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 27, 2010 3:02 pm Hi, In the next month or so we will be upgrading our outdoor entertainment area. Currently we have just plain concrete floor and we're considering upgrading this to tiles or WPC (Wood Plastic Composite Decking). The composite decking looks to be around the $85 per square metre mark (we're looking at ConnectDeck or Modwood). Our area is 9x3m so 27square metre. Therefore 27 x 85 = $2295. A few questions: 1. I know this decking is typically DYI, however, I am HOPELESS when it comes to things like this. I repeat, HOPELESS. It's a bit embarassing really, especially on a forum like this haha. Anyway, does anyone know if there's people who specialise in putting this together? Do I just contact any builder who specialises in decking? And how much do people think this will add to the price? 2. I've noticed on the modwood website it says you shouldn't "wall-in" the decking (ie. it requires ventilation. I have three brick walls which would be surrounding this decking - if a suitable gap was placed around the outside of the decking (ie. 6mm) before it met the brick, would this be ok? 3. And lastly, I've also read that because the decking will be going onto concrete, I would apparently require battens to be attached to the concrete. To get into my outdoor area, I have to step DOWN from our dining room...I'm guessing I could get these battens to exactly the right height so that the decking would be level with my inside tiles (ie. making it level and no step down)? 4. Sorry...adding a forth question. I also just read that when installing over concrete, the decking requires a gap of 6mm between them. This seems a bit large and I'm wondering if this will look silly because the gap is too big? Thanks so much. Re: Composite Decking - Three Questions 2Sep 28, 2010 7:36 am Builder, Carpenter, Landscaper could all do decking, Cost will depend on site conditions and fixing methods chosen. Gap on perimeter would look fine as long as consistent. Battens need to be min 50 mm, So depending on your height this is possible. 6 mm is larger than normal, would recommend the 137 mm wide board to give a better appearance. One final question - we'll be putting in a pool in the next few months. Our area (which is currently concrete) is level with our backyard (where the pool will go). If we decide to go with Modwood, then as Cherub stated, we have to have these Battens at least 5cm in height. This means that the pool and the pool fencing won't be exactly level with the decking anymore (there will be a small step down). Do people think this will look weird or am I being too pedantic? Re: Composite Decking - Three Questions 4Sep 28, 2010 5:44 pm If pool is not yet installed can't level be adjusted? Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: Composite Decking - Three Questions 5Sep 28, 2010 8:38 pm Umm...I have no idea haha. Sorry, I have absolutely ZERO idea when it comes to this kind of stuff. So you're saying the pool (and surrounding landscapes) can be the same level when installed???? I'm guessing this is a very stupid question but I didn't know this could happen lol. Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10932 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
