Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 20, 2010 10:26 pm I'm renovating my laundry and covering the bare cement floor with some tiles. Has anyone used travertine or natural stone tiles..if so what do they look like? Are larger tiles more popular? I have blackbutt timber flooring adjacent to the laundry. Re: choice of floor tiles 2Sep 22, 2010 11:09 am I have natural stone & i think it looks great! Not sure what your question is exactly. If it's just for the laundry, I would think it's unusual to put down stone flooring as it's almost a 'waste' in some ways. It is not cheap to lay & seal & it won't really be noticeable in the laundry. My laundry is stone because the rest of the house is (apart from bedrooms). Travertine usually comes in 400mm to 600mm in size. The smaller sizes - 400 & 450mm will probably be cheaper to lay but it's true that larger tiles are more popular. Depending on the size of your laundry, large tiles may be too big for the space. Re: choice of floor tiles 3Sep 24, 2010 12:43 pm Thanks xquisite for your reply...I know it's only a laundry but I have to pass through it to get to my bedroom (which is adjacent) and also to enter the backyard. That's why I wanted something nice to match the blackbutt floor. Also, I thought larger tiles might make a small space (1.4 metres wide by 4m long) look bigger. Anyway, they don't have to be natural stone, ceramic will do if I can find some nice ones. thanks, camelia Re: choice of floor tiles 4Oct 02, 2010 10:21 am We find a biggeer tile makes a space look larger when you see a number of larger tiles. If you go to big and have say 2 1/2 tiles across the rooms width you may tend to loss the effect you are trying to achieve. Just remember with natural stone it is an amazing material but has its limitations. There are great sealers on the market to protect the material....buts thats exactly what they do is protect....its not a guarantee. If your looking for a maintenance free material for a laundry maybe you should look at other materials. Every tile/material has a pro and a con... choice of floor tiles 6Oct 03, 2010 7:23 pm Hi, try a PVC tile in a stone look. Won't crack, chip. No grout to discolour. It would save you $$$ too! Re: choice of floor tiles 7Oct 15, 2010 10:45 pm Hi Anthony, I ended up getting a plain off white ceramic tile 'laguna' 300x300 and 6mm thick. The buiilder layed the sand cement bed but because the height of timber is differs in the bedroom and the kitchen there is now an 8-10mm gap at the kitchen/laundry doorway and a 19mm difference between the timber in the bedroom and the laundry. Unfortunately he screeded the laundry before finishing the bedroom flooring. 2 tilers have said the tiles cant be raised at the bedroom doorway because the other tiles will be lower...One has said to use 10mm of conflex tile adhesive and another has said to use sand and cement. I'm confused, what are the realistic solutiions?do I just have to put up with catching my toes on the gap or can I raise the level> They make the room much easier to clean for one, reflect more light (if light colour tiles are used), and you dont end up with dust on the top edge of tiles (cause most… 3 9539 CDC Housing Code 3 When to apply Floor Area external face of wall vs Gross Floor Area internal face of wall.
