Hi guys,
Long time lurker, first time poster
My husband and I are building our first home and have started to think about carpet. The main living areas (entry, kitchen, dining, family) will be tiled. We will be putting carpet in the study and formal lounge room downstairs, on the stairs and the 4 bedrooms/passage upstairs. The upper storey floor is on a truss system instead of a suspended slab so despite having insulation installed between the two storeys we're still concerned about noise levels from upstairs.
No children are on the cards for at least 5 years but we have an indoor cat.
I love the subtle pattern of the Signature Silken Shades Shine 39 carpet and it's plush feel. The colours also tone in perfectly with our chosen floor tiles. http://www.signaturefloors.com.au/pdf/s ... cation.pdf
The first carpet dealer I went to said it would be perfect. She said the Silken Shades is 3.98m in width and because all rooms' widths except one are less than 4m there will be minimal joins throughout the house. She seemed on the ball placing joins at the rear of rooms where beds will cover them and inside the walk in linen etc. She also said that the denseness of the carpet will keep it looking new for longer on the stairs (a concern of mine as the stairs are in the entry) and that the denseness should help reduce sound tranfer from upstairs. She also said a good underlay will help further reduce this too.
The second carpet dealer I went to was really trying to steer me away from the Silken Shades stating that because of the subtle pattern, when layed on the stairs it will make the stairs look dirty. Would this be true or would it just look like a patterned carpet going up the stairs?
She also said that the height of the Silken Shades pile (16.5mm) in the formal lounge and study will look silly next to the tiled entry. Would this be true? Wouldn't carpet always look higher than floor tiles regardless?
The second carpet dealer was trying to steer me towards Signature Confidence Carpet http://www.signaturefloors.com.au/pdf/c ... cation.pdf
Also, in terms of underlay. I've read the topics about foam vs rubber underlay but I'm still a bit confused. Specifically I want an underlay that gives a luxurious soft/plush feel but also reduces accoustic transfer of sound from upstairs.
Thank you in advance for any help and assistance!
Colleen
