We put new carpet in our old house and moved straight in with no problems. I just left the windows open for a few hours to move some air through but it wasn't that bad anyway. Personally I don't see the point if it is new carpet, what are you intending to 'clean' off it? Are you worried about fumes or something in particular? The only time we clean it is if it's a wool and it's a bit on the nose we give it an anti-bacterial treatment to fix the proud. That's like 3 times in my 18 years so in short NO !!. Personal use will dictate increasing or reducing frequency. As Anthony said, now and again, we'll get a carpet that retains odour longer than usual. Often it's in an area with poorer ventilation, but a correct cleaning procedure often reduces it enough to make it livable.
