Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 23, 2010 8:37 am Hi All, I have a pine timber floor that I have just pulled the carpet up off. It is really stained and in horrible condition. I live in outback SA so there is not really any chance of even getting a professional in to have a look at my problem. I have rung a few people to discuss the problem and they all replied the same thing......sand it and put a polyurethane on it. The problem......the floor has big stains on it. Quite a few. They are basically just an outline, darker than the natural floor color. They seem to be all over the floor....in the middle of the room on the outside.....random. So......when it rains the outline only of the marks get darker and darker as it rains. It needs to be raining/drizzling for the day really for it to make the marks change color. Yes.....the marks in the middle of the room go darker too. The house is raised about a meter of the ground, it is on concrete stumps and the concrete stumps have a piece if tin on top of them (to stop white ants). I have looked under the house (so have a few friends) and no matter how hard I look (I have looked when it's raining) I can not see water getting in. The stumps don't seem to be wet. I can't see water leaking in from the gutters. Nothing. Can water seep into the boards atmospherically if there was a previous stain? Or must the water be coming from some kind of seeping leak some place? Can I paint the boards with a colored sealer paint and the moisture then try to get out on the bottom of the floorboard rather than the top? Can anyone recommend a colored paint I can use on a timber floor that is a polyurethane? I am stumped and it's hard to find help on timber floors in the outback!! Thanks so much for any help anyone can give me. I hope I covered all the information I have. Katie Re: stains....water seeping in....? 2Aug 23, 2010 5:24 pm With mucky floors, I recommend to clients to finish with a Hardwax Oil (Treatex or Osmo) as these give the floor a bit of character and warmth. Is water running across the top of the joists under the boards? That would be the only way I could think of water seepage getting to those spots. I guess the increased humidity could be altering the moisture within those areas, but I haven't heard of it before. Sanding does remove most of the stains and bumps in old floors, but can't be guaranteed of removing everything - thats why I recommend the Hardwax Oil for character. Pics? Cheers Thanks for your advice. So far i have not noticed any issues with doors and windows.
