Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 05, 2010 3:36 pm Firstly I know very little about carpets hence my post. it was only when i started reading other posts of this forum i realised how much i didn't know. I have just finished building an extension and I am now looking to carpet an upstairs floor including 1 bedroom (4.5m x 3.6m), 1 hall (1m x 5.1m) and the stairs (1m x 16 steps with cut stinger so needs to be overlocked or beaded ~dunno the right wording - down one side) It's a small townhouse for me and my partner, no kids (in the near future). we have hardwood floors on the ground level. I'm after a carpet that will feel nice underfoot, look the part and not too expensive. I dont need one that will last a lifetime as I expect to replace it in say 10 years when the place might get it's next facelift. i have budgeted around $1200. would this cover it? is it much more expensive to have stairs carpeted? can anybody tell me what I should be looking for in a carpet, any recommendations of carpets or suppliers. i live in the city (Melbourne) thanks Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 3Jul 05, 2010 10:07 pm I am afraid to say your budget is a bit light. You need 11.80 metres. So you're looking at about $350 for underlay (a middle of the road one), $350 for laying, plus about $250 in additional stair labour. Depending on if you want the edge overlocked or turned & tucked, that is extra too. That leaves us with about $200 to spend on the actual carpet..... Now a cheap and nasty carpet will set you back say $600. A rental style cheap 14 - 18 ounce polyprop. A decent nylon will sit around $1400. That's a heavy duty or extra heavy duty one with a warranty on wear and a decent stain treatment. Good everyday carpet. A decent SDN will set you back say $1700 - $1900. A reasonable wool twist will be around the same, but maybe getting closer to the $2000 Unless you want to be disappointed down the track ( i mean within months, not years), you need to spend more moola!!mark.. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 4Jul 05, 2010 10:22 pm I can organize it all on Interest Free over 24 Months through GE if you like. We do installations in town most days. Based in Chadstone. I have some stock that I might be able to do some deals on to save you some money too. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 5Jul 05, 2010 11:31 pm Cool its good to have Anthony here to do some number crunching. I don't get too much into that, so glossed over that aspect of you post. Agreed, its definitely worth spending more on a reasonable nylon in preference to cheap polyprops. Ash. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 6Jul 06, 2010 9:57 am I don't know if it's just me, but those figures seem crazy expensive. I recently got a nylon carpet (pile twist) laid with underlay, and with the existing carpet ripped up and disposed of for a four bedroom + hallway + lounge/dining + rumpus room for $4,700. or perhaps I'm just misunderstanding the way Anthony is doing his figures? and it actually works out cheaper than I'm reading. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 7Jul 06, 2010 12:39 pm I don't know about that. Working out carpet, and fitting into floorplans is not my area. But one thing about the floorplan described... its not a large amount of carpet required. Often, (after you have confirmed the amount of carpet required) by looking around at warehouse sales, you get get a nice quality carpet for around half the normal price. So I'd recommend to take your plans with accurate measurements to a store or two and ask how many lineal metres you require. Then go looking for remnant rolls that fit in with your plans. Ash. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 8Jul 06, 2010 6:04 pm zx9. Budget is a bit low, as Anthony said. But Anthony's labour prices do seem a bit high. Depending on orientation of length of room, to length of hall, 9.8 metres of carpet needed. 4.6 for room, 5.2 for hall [no hall joins], offcut to stairs. If room length is at right angles to length of hall, a join will go in the room to have no joins in the hall. Better to have join in the room than the hall. Still get away with 9.8 metres Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 9Jul 07, 2010 7:15 am Yes. I posted the numbers when I was a bit tired. You'll get enough off the side of the hall to do 20 standards at TR 50. So it would be as Mark says.
Also, I use a workroom, so yes my labour charges are higher than norm. But I have 30 layers to draw on and any issues are sorted same day, so it's worth it. Thesedays, Workcover, Payroll Tax, even Super, is tricky. (a carpet retailer in NSW was taken to the cleaner by the Tax Dept a few years ago.....back tax on layers). We use a dedicated 3rd party installation company who specialize in that and only that. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 10Jul 07, 2010 7:17 am royalblue  I don't know about that. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 11Jul 07, 2010 3:43 pm thanks for all the replies. i am still digesting some of the information above. regarding the orientation of the room/hall they share one long wall, that is you go up the stairs along the hall and at the end of the hall - straight ahead is the bedroom. since the bedroom is 3.6m wide i figured it could be done as one piece and then i guess the join would go under the door? I was thinking the same, it's not a lot of carpet so hopefully I can get some left over carpet I like much cheaper. I did consider just buying some cheap carpet from graysonline but I know nothing about laying carpet and the stairs will be tricky so best to leave it to the professionals. so I guess judging from the discussion above I will need to stretch my budget a bit further. I'm not really after the best carpet money can buy. just middle of the road stuff. It will be shoes off policy for going upstairs. So can anyone make any recommendations of suppliers or is it best to just visit 3 or 4 in my area and go with the cheapest twist pile nylon and avoid polyprop. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 12Jul 07, 2010 8:23 pm Flooring is not some cheap, nasty stuff. It is a crucial foundation for everyday of your life. You'll regret putting garbage in. A cheap nylon twist could well be worse than a high gauge poly. Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 13Jul 07, 2010 10:24 pm Take a plan and get an installed quote. You need to sort out how you want the exposed stairs finished, as the cost difference of the edge finish can be a lot more if you want it overlocked. Turn and tack is cheaper. Possibly but a high gauge poly won't feel nice. At least a nylon feels and looks nicer. Here's an example of a fairly inexpensive nylon twist. http://www.onlinecarpet.com.au/products ... rive%20SDN Don't know what the price would be laid including stairs, but I'd guess around $1600. For your purposes, Dunlop Springtred or Springtred Extra underlay will probably suffice and be inexpensive. Ash. I definietly feel a lot more confident in buying the right carpet now. I will hunt around this weekend and see what I can find. Will post my findings. Cheers Bernie Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 16Jul 28, 2010 2:33 pm so far it would seem everyone on here is right ... 3 quotes have come in between 2k to 3k approx so budget has been stretched onto the creditcard. Funny enough Floorworld was 3.2k for the exact same carpet as Carpet call who quoted 2.3k yet Floorworlds carpet is $20 a metre cheaper so they must make a killing on labour. All the carpets I have been looking at are SDN with 15 years warranty. I am yet to decide between the 2 lowest quotes but did have one question. They both quoted a different way of doing the stairs to archive the same result. The stairs are bullnose/federation that need to wrap around each bullnose and be overlocked down one side. One place said they would use a seperate bit of carpet for each step and join them under the bullnose whilst the other said one continuous bit that would wrap under each bullnose. Apperance wise this would amount to the same thing but does anyone have any views on which way is better? Re: another recommend me a carpet thread... 17Jul 30, 2010 10:01 pm No difference. The price sounds a bit high. It's the same difference with the stairs. Call me if you want a competitive price. I have 42 Months Interest Free on right now. No need to use your credit card.
