Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 26, 2010 10:10 pm Hi, just need some advise guys. I have just put a deposit for some NSW Blackbutt feature raw timber flooring. I need some feedback on featured blackbutt, as I have been advised that feature timer can crack and split over time where the features are is this correct? Also, though the flooring company was more than happy to assure me that if they was any problems there would fix what's required, there were un-prepared to give warranty on the product. The reason being is that it's raw timber and because of the variables in timber. Is this correct for anyone that's bought raw timber. The installer gives a 1 year warranty on they work, however supplier does'nt. Thanks Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 2Aug 01, 2010 11:05 am wow I didnt know this and we just paid a lot of money for our feature and better blackbutt! I hope this isnt the case because I will be one very unhappy customer!! Have you looked at the feature and better?? It still has the beautiful feature in it but not as much, maybe this could be an option for you, I guess it would take the risk of cracking down seeing as there isnt so much. I bet you cant wait to see it in as I know I cant RHI - BALDIVIS PERTH 2005 Bought/Finished WA Housing Centre Home 2010 Building the Benchmark with REDINK Homes in The Avalon 2013 Building the Michigan with Cont3nt Living In Highbury Estate! Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 3Aug 01, 2010 5:11 pm I've installed and finished quite a few feature grade floors. And to date I haven't had any problems. My only suggestion is to go over all the gum veins, cracks, splits, holes etc with ebony timbermate putty. This really highlights the features in the floors and smooths out the finish. Also suggest sealing with a hardwax oil as it really brings out the full character. Cheers Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 4Aug 01, 2010 6:50 pm Flooring is seasoned - surface checking and cracking occurs during the seasoning (generally kiln-drying) process. Provided you acclimatise it in the house a couple of weeks before laying you won't have any problems Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 5Aug 01, 2010 6:53 pm Such a good suggestion to match putty colour to the small knot/hole/grain colour! I've seen a floor done that way and it is stunning. Nothing less appealing than seeing a dark circle filled with light filler - only highlights the filler and removes the character even though it is there. The only thing I haven't seen is really large knots .. I suppose you could cut them out if you really really need to use that board Another thing - I've heard complaints from installers about installing feature grade floors. Never understood why until ... - they hate the extra work of filling! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 6Aug 01, 2010 8:18 pm Many people buy feature grade for the 'feature', not just for the price. There isn't actually a need to fill borer holes and gum pockets with putty filler Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 7Aug 01, 2010 8:39 pm Yes acclimatization of the timber is very important, and no puttying everything is not necessary. However to putty a 80 sqm feature grade floor would only take about 2/3 hours and I always think the final product is superior. Here's a pic of feature grade Sydney Blue gum floor I finished with ebony putty and sealed with a hardwax oil about 4 weeks ago - comes up okay I reckon. Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 8Aug 01, 2010 11:01 pm hey I would love to see that pic but nothing is coming up. Looks very clean. Do you know which mill? And do you have those long promised tallowwood floors ? Excellent site, BTW ... most sites only tell you the species (even that is missing on some sites), but you actually say what is it finished with and it makes a huge difference No wonder that many people have so much trouble deciding which species, which grade and which product (finish type) and which gloss level to finish with, when this info is not available anywhere ... most of us select their floor using the little bit of info avaialble and then their imagination if they need to change the finish type or grade or gloss level Oh, if I may suggest, maybe you could add timber grade to the pics where you know what it was? And gloss level for those finishes that do come in different gloss levels (like Bona, Synteko, polys, Treatex oil etc.)?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 12Aug 02, 2010 6:14 pm Namtrak, is this really a feature grade timber!?!?!? Looks very clean. Do you know which mill? ............. Yes this was definitely feature grade, this was one of the Cooma floors bought from Laws auctions. The client have expressed their surprise at how well the floors come up given the amount of knots, veins etc that was in it when they installed it And do you have those long promised tallowwood floors ? ....................... Contacted the client the other day, they still haven't painted the skirts yet - they'll send me some pics when the room is finished Oh, if I may suggest, maybe you could add timber grade to the pics where you know what it was? Yupper onto that tonight, thanks for the feedback Re: Advise on Blackbutt Feature Timber flooring 14Aug 02, 2010 8:43 pm Without completely hijacking this thread, I am trying to filter my pics - as most of my work is either rejuvenating radiata or cypress floors - and we can only see so much of that Over the coming days I will be uploading some tallowwood, blackbutt, messmate and vic ash/tassie oak pics. That radiata pine Canberra floor is so beautifully light Radiata and cypress, whilst both pines are completely different species Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15886 I am looking for someone who might have tackled a similar issue as me.
