Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 24, 2010 10:46 am Like most, I have no idea when it comes to carpet. But I have been reading up all I can find on the forum about underlays and installing methods. So we are currently in the process of building our first home, carpet and timber floors will be installed after handover. We are looking for a middle range SDN carpet (mostly due to cost) Carpet will only be in bedrooms(4), study room and rumpus. The rest of the house will be timber. (on concrete slab) Currently we have no kids, but in the future (maybe 3 - 4 years). We also have a outdoor dog, that may come inside from time to time. I am currently looking at this particular beaulieu carpet with prime underlay. Style: Tuscan Sun colour: Amazonestone http://www.beaulieu.com.au/bolyu_product.php?smenu=residential&id=52 I really liked the pattern of this carpet, my only concern is the pile height which is 9mm. Will this crush easily? The choice of this carpet style was chosen only due to appearance. It was priced at $180 broadloom metre (i think) installed with prime. (still waiting on a proper quote) Is this a quality carpet? or is there something else people can recommend for around that price range? Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 3Jun 28, 2010 12:45 pm Hey Ash, Thanks for responding. I particularly liked the pattern. Im looking for something like this, perhaps for the pattern not to be so defined. It doesnt need to be beaulieu. I like that the carpet pictured has a lot of interest in its texture, and that its NOT a linear style. As I've explained before, linear designs can have some issues, and styles that are more organic make a lot of sense. Here are some carpets with a bit of a pattern to it you might like. http://www.beaulieu.com.au/bolyu_produc ... tial&id=53 http://www.beaulieu.com.au/bolyu_colour ... 37&cid=755 http://www.northstatecarpets.com.au/pro ... 66#current http://www.northstatecarpets.com.au/pro ... 61#current Ash. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 5Jul 02, 2010 11:18 am Thanks Ash. I think I have one in mind that I saw in the store which is 80% Nylon and 20% wool. Will make a final decision this weekend. The guy said he recommended using supablue as an underlay instead of the prime. He said it would be slightly more luxurious underfoot than prime. He showed us both underlays, the prime being quite firm and the supablue (big wavey profile) more squishy. He explained prime would be used more in commercial installations. whats your opinion? Should be a nice quality carpet. I think Supablue is too thick. Spongey underlay might feel nicer, but is not so good for the longevity of the carpet installation. The more movement, the more potential for problems. If you must have a spongier underlay and don't want the firmness of Prime, go for Bridestone Platinum. It has a bit more softness compared to Prime. Ash. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 7Jul 02, 2010 8:55 pm I know this carpet, very good quality, I used to sell it. Nice carpet and easy to vacuum. Love the texture. Nice carpet and easy to vacuum. Love the texture. yeah that image is cav brem ^.^ The carpet i choose looks very similar, however its a wool/polyester blend. Thanks for the advice Ash, I didnt actually have a look at the Platinum underlay, i'll get the guy to show me that next time Im there. He swears that the supablue will be fantastic but geez its thicker than the carpet itself. lol Building: M3tr1c0n - Santorini 26 [30.04.10] Builders on Site [29.11.10] Handover [11.12.10] Moved in [CURRENTLY] Moved in and adding all those extras we couldnt pay our builder to do http://mnsantorini.blogspot.com Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 10Jul 05, 2010 7:17 pm faerie The carpet i choose looks very similar, however its a wool/polyester blend. I wouln't buy a carpet with polyester in it. You got a link to details of the carpet? And SupaBlue is too thick and spongy. These characteristics together don't make it a good choice. Does the retailer you are dealing with also sell Dunlop underlays, or only Bridgestone? Ash. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 11Jul 05, 2010 10:31 pm Didn't know there was a wool polyester carpet even made.....yuk. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 12Jul 05, 2010 11:54 pm I've heard of some wool rich commercial carpet that has polyester melted into the yarn, supposedly as a method of retaining the twist. Hmmm not sure I like the idea. I haven't seen 80/20 wool/polyester. Might be a bum-steer with a retailer saying polyester, but it not being the case. That's why I asked for a link with details of the carpet. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 13Jul 06, 2010 7:40 am Yes. Melti or Meltbond is used by VCC and GH and also Feltex used to use it a little. Maximum 10%, bit often 5% to restrict shedding. Didn't know it was polyester though. Learn something everyday !!! Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 14Jul 06, 2010 9:51 am oh darn it guys, i knew i shouldve gone with my gut instinct. As soon as I saw polyester I thought oh...maybe i shouldnt. lol. He said it was very similar to polyester. I googled it yesterday and found nylon was much better. :/ Well all I can tell you guys is that its from Floorworld and its from their Crown range which he said is made by Access International (I cant even find this company). Not sure if hes got dunlop underlays. You seem to be posting information in riddles. Now its "similar to" polyester??? Can you get specific information about the carpet? Ash. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 16Jul 06, 2010 10:45 am oops. sorry I meant to write nylon. he said the polyester is similar to nylon. The carpet didnt have any ACCS labels. I've never heard of a carpet with that combination. If it is as you say, its a disaster waiting to be laid. Have you actually paid a deposit or signed to buy this carpet? If so, back out if you can NOW! Ash. Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 18Jul 06, 2010 12:15 pm we've paid a depo, but I can still change the carpet cos were also doing timber. I just spoke to the guy and he said he can get pretty much any carpet I want so maybe I might see if we can afford the cav brem or maybe go back to the beaulieu. I told him to hold off on the carpet choice for now. lol Building: M3tr1c0n - Santorini 26 [30.04.10] Builders on Site [29.11.10] Handover [11.12.10] Moved in [CURRENTLY] Moved in and adding all those extras we couldnt pay our builder to do http://mnsantorini.blogspot.com Re: Advice on carpet for a new home: beaulieu carpet 19Jul 06, 2010 12:21 pm I just looked up the Floorworld catalogue. Not a word about polyester is the range they promote there. One they say is "wool blend". Normally, any carpet with wool content will have at least 50% wool. I don't much like the 50/50 wool blends. 80/20 wool/nylons are usually very good though. We're just going around in circles, so best you look again at carpets you like, and provide a link to the carpet or get clear and accurate info on what carpet it is, and we can go from there. Cheers!
