Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 22, 2010 10:05 pm Hey all, Ok we need some help!!! We have a house that we are renovating and it has floor boards in it. They are original from when the house was built and that was about 60 years ago. They have been covered their whole life i believe and they are in pretty good condition. They don't seem to have to much glue or anything on them and i think they will sand up pretty easy. I would have to hire all the sanders and things so i believe it will cost about $500 to complete from wo to go. I have had a quote and that was $1600 to do the whole lot and with 3 coat's of varnish. What do you guys think? Is it worth us trying to save the money and going through the pain of doing it our self or should we just get the expert in and have it done for us? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Re: Pay an expert or have a crack ourselves? 3Jun 22, 2010 10:23 pm For $1600 & 3 coats pay the pro! Much easier to get a professional to do it. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Pay an expert or have a crack ourselves? 7Jul 02, 2010 8:54 pm Pay a pro. My dad did a DIY job in a similar situation; he was unable to control the sander with sufficient precision and the resultant job just didn't look good enough - the sander can gouge the timber very easily and with old boards, you can't replace them easily if you damage them too much. And even if you don't do too much damage, it's just very hard to get it a nice, even, smooth finish. OK, if you were doing a whole house worth, you would get better along the way, but a pro will have had much more practice even so. Status: sold our first house, moved in with parents, bought our second in Pakenham, still planning to build in a few years time. The last thing you want is those sanding burn marks, and you will be much happier with the final result Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Shudder. Even the first job of punching nails on your knees for hours on end will convince you it's not worth it. I suggest that you get a recommendation or see a job before you hire someone, though. The quality does vary and I can always spot a ******* polished floor. Re: Pay an expert or have a crack ourselves? 10Jul 22, 2010 12:02 pm We did both in our last house... paid the pro and then did another room ourselves. It's REALLY hard work, physically, even if you are fit! And it's difficult to get a good finish on the edges. Pay the pro I say!
